Teaneck police are investigating break-ins at a Cedar Lane pizzeria and Chinese food store reported early Saturday.
A passerby alerted police to a smashed glass front door at Coliseum Pizza around 6:30 a.m., police said. Another break-in at New Asia Chinese Restaurant was discovered a short time later, also with a glass door shattered.
In both cases money from the cash register was taken, according to police. The burglaries are believed to have happened sometime after 3 a.m., between when officers regularly check area stores. The exact amount of cash taken was not immediately available.

smashed front door-wow! The police during their patrols didn't notice that? do the police actually patrol Cedar Lane during nonbusiness hours? And why don't these businesses have ALARM systems installed? Crime is on the rise, even in our little utopia town, if you want to leave cash in the register and not have an alarm system then you are inviting someone to rob you!

Hi karin, I'm still waiting to give you that tour of the fire station. I would enjoy very much to answer your questions and address your concerns. Let me know! We have the best java in town and I will get light cream to boot.
Let's clear the air once and for all.

Nice response-to dump on someone after they've been burglarized-and to blame the police as well. Would be kinder to have a little compassion and understanding. Hoping for more kindness in 2012.

I didn't blame the police Judy, but why wasn't a SMASHED out front door noticed by them? Simple question. I have plenty of compassion but I also read the news and see what is going on in this area, crime on the rise etc. so I do what I need to do to protect my family and home! I am hoping that common sense becomes more prevalent in 2012.

Karin, your comment, "Crime is on the rise, even in our little utopia town", got me thinking about how true or false this statement was. So, I decided to look up the actual data from the NJ Uniform Crime Report (UCR). The UCR disclosed that Teaneck has the 3rd highest crime rate out of the 70 municipalities that make up Bergen County, with only Hackensack and Paramus having a higher rate of crime. A look at the UCR over the last 30 years shows that crime, including burglaries, have actually decreased not increased over the years. Here are the numbers:
1980 - Violent Crime 129
Property Crime 2,505
Burglaries 1,069
1990 - Violent Crime 183
Property Crime 1,486
Burglaries 326
2000 - Violent Crime 78
Property Crime 568
Burglaries 152
2010 - Violent Crime 79
Property Crime 599
Burglaries 127

the police cant be every single place at every single minute and the article states they " regularly check area stores." What happened to putting blame where blame is due: onthe criminals! I also notice that a passerby first reported this. Unfortunately i think many people probably just walk by stuff like this without calling anyone. the Police can't be allover so residents need to do their part too. again, blame where blame is due! I look forward to reading here about when this person is caught

Maybe we are just hearing more about the crimes that are committed in town that makes it seem that crime is on the rise...

The criminals are the ones to blame here. Although Im not sure why anyone would leave money in a register in this day and age. Cash businesses should have some type of safe to lock things up at night. I wonder if this is an inside job. Two businesses that 'leave money in the register' broken into? Are those the only ones with their windows smashed? And why is the article telling us 'when police make their patrols'? Breaking in a window seems very amateur, but this seems planned by someone who knows about the area or the businesses.

99% of the stores on Cedar Lane have full glass doors or large plate glass windows, the rear of the stores (facing parking lots) are the only solid doors in most cases steel that these stores have (most stores have). I am thinking it is a heck of a lot easier to smash a window or front door and rob a place then attempt to enter through the rear doors. And yes the criminals are to blame but some responsibility needs to lay with the business owners, as Anthony pointed out in his post.

I can't imagine these stores' insurance carriers would'nt require a central station alarm system. How come the police weren't called immediatly?

Now that we are in the second decade of the 21st century, I have an alternative to suggest in lieu of multiple separate alarm systems - video surveillance in areas of traffic problems or crime. The Cedar Lane:Garrison Ave area has traffic congestion and violations. Viewed at the TPD, accidents or crime would be noticed in "real time". Recorded, it would give the TPD evidence to help solve these crimes. Don't be shocked at this idea. The closest video cam is just over the river at River St. and Anderson, an extension of Cedar Lane. Help the TPD keep Teaneck safe.

I for have seen the police driving up & down Cedar Lane at all hours of the night & into the early morning hours. I live only 2 blocks in from Cedar Lane & they come up & down my street to in their loop to Cedar Lane. I also used to work the overnight shifts & early morning shifts where I would run into CVS at all crazy hours going in to work and getting my cigarettes(I have such quit smoking & no longer work) but I still see them. Not sure how they missed the broken in door but it's easy for us to ask that when we are not the ones "cruising" by on Cedar Lane at that time of night/early morning what they can/can not see.
