Bugs and Seafood Highlight Shore Weekend
What to do at the shore this weekend.
Summer is here. If that's not reason enough to make the trip down the shore, perhaps the following events will convince you to mount your boogie board again this weekend.
Insectcropolis, "The Bugseum of New Jersey" is holding Bugfest 2011 Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Toms River. You'll definitely want to wash off in the surf after taking in a cockroach race. But it's not all sport. For the kids, there is face painting and scavenger hunting, with prizes too.
If Bugfest doesn't whet your appetite, perhaps the 25th annual Belmar Seafood Festival will. Sample some of the state's finest restaurants, and wash it all down with craft beers and wines. There's an activity tent for the kids and live music to drown them out. The festival runs every day this weekend.
Go Greek if Jersey food doesn't do it for you. Try the gyros, loukoumades and souvlaki at the St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church Greek festival in Toms River. Just because you can't pronounce the food, doesn't mean you can't eat it. The festival runs Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Show the kids how easy they've got it today. Bring them to the Historic Village at Allaire in Wall Township on Sunday from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. for an exhibit on what school was like in the 1830s. There's plenty of mind-numbing memorization in store for them, so make sure to hide their electronic devices before driving down.
If your beach body isn't up to par, flex your thrift muscle instead. Point Pleasant is holding atown wide yard sale Saturday. Maps with participating addresses will be available at stores along Bridge Avenue and Route 88.
Dogs are welcome down the shore too. Bring them to the Doggy Yappy Hour at Ocean County Park at 6 p.m. Friday and check out the displays, vendors, demonstrations and giveaways.
Do you long for the magic of the first American Idol Season? You can rediscover your love for runner-up Justin Guarini, who stars in the Surflight Theatre production of Rent in Beach Haven. Showings are at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
Did we miss anything? Let us know in the comments. Don't forget the sunscreen.
