Dog Park Work Nearing Completion

Unused swimming pool converted into town's first off-leash dog run.

Teaneck's long-discussed dog park is on track to open by the end of January, a town official said Tuesday.

The schedule could change based on any weather-related delays, Township Manager William Broughton told the town council. Crews have been working to convert an unused above-ground pool at Phelps Park into an off-leash dog run.

The dog park was first proposed more than five years ago. The township ran a pilot program allowing owners to have their dogs off leashes in Phelps Park and received no complaints, officials have said.

The town council initially considered upgrading the pool to meet the Americans with Disabilities Act, but scrapped the idea when bids came in at around $700,000.

A proposal to build the dog park across from Temple Emeth on Windsor Road was dropped when officials learned the area could be considered wetlands.

I still find it mind-boggling that upgrading a pool could cost the price of two average homes!

Glad to see that the thing is almost complete.

My dog is really excited. She's been holding it in for two years, waiting for a place to run around and tinkle off-leash!

I am so excited. I don't have my doggie yet but we plan on getting one before Valentine's day and with Phelps park being so close to our house it's a win-win for us. Perfect timing too.
Plus when my grand puppies come they will have a safe place to go as well.

If you haven't gotten them yet, be wary of "breeders" that are actually puppy mills and dog stores that mistreat animals.

try the ASPCA or a no kill shelter that screens dogs to find the perfect fit for your family's needs. There are so many wonderful dogs off all ages that need your love.

Thanks Jan. I have a friend who volunteers at a shelter and she gave me a list of places to go to find the puppy that we are looking for.

Dogs are great! They encourage their owners to think about others than themselves and it gets them out of the house and exercising. Properly done and maintained, it will be a benefit to the Phelps Park neighborhood. It is a good location as the Bergen County Overpeck Park Dog Run is across town. Just one question: Is the Dog Run open on Fridays?

No, the dogs will have to hold it until Saturday. Seriously, why would it be closed of Fridays?

@John: The dog park can only be open 4 days a week due to a union contract...... That the council approved..... now they say they have a contractual obligation..... ;)

@Art: This is Teaneck. The dog park is open on Fridays and a car (complement of tax payers of Teaneck) will also be provided to all those who can make a request to the council.

So, teaneck has nothing better to do with our tax dollars than to make a dog park? I could think of better ways, like keeping the library open longer, what say, teaneck?

@Joe:

Yes they have something better to do with our tax dollars.

Teaneck council approved a car that is maintained and fueled at your expense for the highest paid member of the administration who by the way needed a "RELIABLE" car to get to work (over 100 mile trip). I guess you should think twice before talking about town spending money on a dog park.

joe bloe- Yes the library should be opened longer BUT since there is nothing at the park since they took the pool down why not put up a dog park. Don't knock it...guess you don't have a dog.
