Man Faces Attempted Murder Charge in Englewood Attack

Quick action by police officers credited with saving bleeding man's life

An Englewood man faces an attempted murder charge after he attacked another city man in a bloody fight near West Englewood Avenue and Lafayette Place, leaving him hospitalized with serious injuries Thursday, authorities said.

Derrick Rose, 53, and the 54-year-old victim were arguing when Rose struck him in the head with a pipe, according to Police Chief Arthur O'Keefe.

The victim managed to disarm his attacker of the pipe, but Rose pulled a large folding knife and stabbed the man in the neck and throat twice before stabbing him again in the face, O'Keefe said. The wounded man continued to fight back, eventually stumbling away and collapsing.

Englewood police quickly converged on the area following several 911 calls around 4:30 p.m. and found the injured man with blood gushing from an artery, O'Keefe said. They carried him to a patrol car and rushed to Englewood Hospital and Medical Center.

"The rapid decision to transport him by those patrol officers undoubtedly saved the victim's life," the chief said, noting he suffered significant blood loss.

Police also managed to grab Rose as he tried to flee, O'Keefe said. He was treated at Holy Name Medical Center in Teaneck for minor injuries before being processed by police.

Investigators recovered the knife and pipe Rose tossed in a nearby creek, O'Keefe said. Weapons-related charges were also likely to be filed against Rose.

Just saw this on the news about a hour ago. What is wrong with people? It is getting so that you are not safe anywhere, anymore. Hope no one was seriously hurt by this and that they catch the person/people that did this. People wonder why I want to leave the state of NJ...this could have happened anywhere I know that but the crime in Northern NJ is getting crazy. We moved here from Bloomfield because it was getting too much like Newark and now it seems that the crime is moving North also. Time to pack up and head south and not talking about Southern NJ either.

Yes how stupid of somebody to think with the amount of taxes we pay here that the crime would actually be low and the area safe.

No I didn't do research because we inherited our house from my husband's mother when she passed away 13 years ago. We are living in the house he grew up in. We want to move to South Carolina. The taxes in NJ are horrible.

Englewood is not getting bad, it's getting worse! I've lived in town for 10 years and whether it's the adults or teenagers, crime is everywhere. As for helping the cops, well I'm not saying cops are bad but they to have faults. Google cops arrested in Englewood, NJ the day before this situation happened and see what you get. I do help when ever I can, recently I was burglarized and I HELPED them more than they helped me.

I can't believe how stupid! Two comments "I hope no one got hurt". The guy gets stabbed in the face, beat up, stabbed in a neck artery, and loses almost all his blood.I think there is a clue there.
