Financial Sector Among Top Garrett Donors, Study Says
Republican incumbent given about $900,000 from finance, real estate and insurance interests, according to a study.
Donations from financial, insurance and real estate interests made up nearly 56 percent of the more than $1.6 million raised by Republican Rep. Scott Garrett in the current race, a report from the Sunlight Foundation found.
Only two other members of congress have received more from financial, real estate and insurance groups in the current election cycle, according to the study. Garrett received a total of $918,038 from the interests.
The Sunlight Foundation said the campaign cash buys access. Garrett chairs a subcommittee overseeing financial market regulation, including the Securities and Exchange Commission.
“It buys face time at fundraisers and a chance to make sure that members of Congress hear about the concerns of the financial sector – over and over and over again. But at these high concentrations, it also buys dependence. Dozens of members of Congress are at a point where they can’t really run for office without the support of donors from this sector. And that’s a troubling proposition, given the fiscal and financial sector policy that’s at stake,” the foundation said.
The Wantage Republican is running against Teaneck Deputy Mayor Adam Gussen, a Democrat who had not raised the required minimum amount for federal reporting as of June 30.
A Garrett campaign official did not respond to a request for comment.

And this is, somehow, a surprise?
Bought and paid for politicians. Who knew?

Oh, our "friends" from the "financial, insurance and real estate interests" are backing Cong. Garrett. I wonder if the includes Goldman Sachs or Merrill Lynch/Bank of America? Who bought Countrywide Mortgage? If they are backing Garrett, it is all the more reason to go for Gussen.

Garrett has one of the most extreme voting records in congress, he voted against health coverage for 9/11 rescue workers, disaster relief for Hurricane Katrina, National Highway Bridge Reconstruction and Inspection Act, Infant Mortality Pilot Programs , Voting Rights Act Reauthorization, Student Loan Increases, a bill that made it more difficult for taxpayers to renounce their U.S. citizenship to avoid taxes. All of those bills received bipartisan support now on top of that I find he is a bought and paid for shill of Wall St.... can't say I am surprised.
Garrett is too extreme for NJ, too extreme for America.

A system which has only two viable parties, allows lobbyists to pay their way to votes and has no term limits is a system which is totally corrupt and broken. He is just another shill in a long line of shills; our current President included who has his hands out for Wall Street money at the same time he bashes the so called fat cats. The hypocrisy is mindboggling. It's how the system is run; the game is played and Garrett will continue to win as he is in a district that will seemingly vote Republican all the time; and if by chance he loses, his opponant will line his pockets with the same funds.

I'm surprised any of you on this particular website are making such statements. Where do a very large percentage of people from Ridgewood and Glen Rock work?

I'm surprised that no one is asking who is providing financial support to our Senators Menendez and Lautenberg?"

Yes because of course unions don't give any money to politicians only businesses.

The report used for this article only covers the first half of this year.Garrett's contribution's through June actually were a touch over $1.85 million. His cash on hand as of June 30 was over $2 million. He has no doubt continued to receive contributions since then.
On the other side the statement about Adam Gussen should have been in the past tense. As of June 30, he was not required to file because he had not raised more than $5,000. By now he no doubt has, but it is unlikely that he has raised anything close to the amount he needs to run an effective campaign against Garrett.
The third quarter report which should bring things up to date is due on October 15th.
