Driver Hit 10-Year-Old Girl In Crosswalk, Police Say

Driver issued four tickets, police say.

A 67-year-old Teaneck man was issued four summonses after striking a young girl as she crossed at Teaneck Road and Degraw Avenue on her way home from school Wednesday afternoon, police said.

Allan Freedman was driving a red mini-van when he struck the 10-year-old as she crossed in a crosswalk with a crossing guard around 3:20 p.m., police said.  The girl was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center with a hip injury and complaints of pain.

Freedman was ticketed for careless driving, failure to observe a traffic signal, failure to comply with a school crossing guard's signal and failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk, said Sgt. William Croonquist, who handled the report.

Police took witness statements and said they do not believe the crossing guard crossed children against a green traffic light.

I think that's pretty sad that this poor girl was walking in the crosswalk with a crossing guard & was hit by a car. I think they should take his license away.

Wow...nice. Blame the crossing guard for holding up a stop sign and not using his/her powers to physically stop the car who struck that poor child. You are correct that something isn't right......but that 'something' includes your immediate blame of the crossing guard, and not of the driver of the vehicle that struck the child.

Hey, wait a minute, DMAB6395, how do you know it was a male driver? Is that a little gender bias creeping in? Was it raining? Dark? Was the vehicle a "18 wheeler" or a Mini car? In any case, with such a big, busy intersection close to our Fire Station, would it be advisable to have a video camera in place to record accidents if they are frequent enough?

Hey Art...read the article again...the answers to some of your questions are there. I do remember that it was raining everywhere in NNJ yesterday and it does get dark just after 4:30pm, if that's the time of the accident.

Hey Art, the article states the drivers gender, the type of vehicle and time of the day (ie, light or dark out). Shouldnt you read the whole article for all the details before starting your rant????

NJP and M.O.: You could be right BUT I posted my comment at 1:50 PM and THIS version of the article was posted at 4:50 PM. Thanks for the heads-up though. Keeps everybody honest. Art

Sorry Art...shouldn't have doubted you.

NJP: Not to worry. Given the facts you had, YOU were right. Still, for high traffic intersections with a lot of traffic, maybe we should have a video camera or two. Let the drivers know about it. Did you know there is a TV camera monitoring the municipal parking lot? It is mounted on our former police building. It has been there a long time. I don't know if it is functional. If it is not, maybe it should be taken down? Perhaps we could sell it on eBay?

hate to say it but i am surprised we dont have this happen more often. Teaneck has some very very busy roadways. Art, maybe bring this article to the council? ask them to study a traffic safety camera... i think this issue is more important that some of the sillyness they seem to dwell on

James: Good point. As many Patch readers know, I do bring problems up to Council. Anybody can come to a Council meeting - check the date and time first - and speak before the Council for up to 5 minutes. Residents should know that the township maintains an annual "pin" map of every traffic accident that occurs in Teaneck. Perhaps the public see we can see where accidents are most common. The TPD and TDPW have been effective in reducing accidents at some intersections. Accidents on county and state routes require additional coordination. Last I recall, Teaneck has ~1600 traffic accidents a year - about four/day.

How could a traffic cam have prevented this accident?

Blaming the crossing guard??!! You have got to be kidding? What did you expect this person to do jump in front of the moving vehicle? That is easily one of stupidest comments I have ever seen on this blog.

George I have witnessed crossing guards numerous times crossing kids against the light (accident waiting to happen)...not that this crossing guard did that.

the article is very detailed and spells out every ticket issued. if you read you see he was ticketed for: "ailure to observe a traffic signal, failure to comply with a school crossing guard's signal" ... that explains it. lets but blame where blame belongs.

Yes, perhaps it is "case closed" on this accident but. . . how about the NEXT accident? How many accidents have taken place at this intersection this year? Daytime? Nighttime? Rush hours? Timing of light signals a cause? Line of sight? When accidents occur they could be random or frequent. Teaneck has around 1600 accidents a year. At locations where accidents are frequent, we should find out why and make changes. Like a dentist, traffic engineers emphasize prevention.

Once again I ask how would a traffic cam have prevented the accident? This is a case of a man driving badly.
With respect to the crossing guard, we have all seen situations where questionable judgement was used, but generally speaking the guards(considering the thousands of "crossings" done every year) do an exemplary job.

George asks "how would a traffic cam have prevented the accident?" I am focused on the NEXT accident that is preventable. Traffic planners can use information to make it harder for "a man driving badly" and others to have an accident. If video surveillance can reduce that number to 10, that would seem be progress, no?
