Hackensack River County Park Needs Repair

Columnist says park is in disrepair.

Hackensack River County Park stretches along the Hackensack River just north of Route 4 behind the Riverside Square Mall. The south end of the park has a flagpole, benches, and a pier that juts out over the Hackensack River. This pier is a pleasant spot for fishing or bird watching. A cobble stone path leads north from the flagpole to a stretch of grass. On the other end of the grass, a boardwalk takes nature lovers into the woods.

A gravel path brings hikers from the boardwalk through the bulk of the park. The landscape is a mixture of forests and marsh. Benches dot the path. Occasional spurs connect the gravel path to bird blinds along the Hackensack River shore. Birders can hide in the bird blinds to get a close look at the wildlife.

Hackensack River County Park has the potential to be a great recreational facility. Unfortunately, this county asset has degraded into disrepair. Litter is strewed all over the park. One puddle had half a dozen plastic bags floating in it. An overturned shopping cart lay next to the path.

The park contains a deck for viewing the forest canopy. Educational signs on the deck are covered in graffiti. The roofs to two nearby rain shelters are falling apart. A pier in the woods also needs repair. One of the educational signs on it is damaged, while another sign is missing. Bergen County has neglected Hackensack River County Park for far too long.

The Bergen County website currently states that Hackensack River County Park is under redevelopment. But as of now, no date has been set for upgrades to be done at the Park.
