Route 3 Eastbound Expected to Reopen by Tuesday

NJ Transit cross-honored bus tickets on area rail lines after water main break caused major delays.

UPDATED 4:45 p.m. Monday: Work to repair a water main break on Route 3 eastbound near the Meadowlands Sports Complex will continue through rush hour, according to United Water.

"We have made some good progress since this morning," company spokesman Steve Goudsmith told Patch.

A new section of the water main has been installed and crews are working to fill it. Work will continue through the evening hours, he said.

NJ Transit bus tickets and passes will be honored on Montclair-Boonton, Pascack Valley and Main/Bergen County Line trains. NJ Transit reported 20-30 minute delays for buses in the area.

First report:

An early Monday water main break forced the closure of eastbound Route 3 near the Meadowlands Sports Complex, creating a nightmarish traffic situation for area commuters.

Vehicles were being diverted to the Route 3 service road, the New Jersey Turnpike, and Route 17. The state Department of Transportation warned motorists to plan other routes to avoid "extenisive delays."

NJ Transit bus tickets and passes will be honored on Montclair-Boonton, Pascack Valley and Main/Bergen County Line trains today, according to the transit agency.

Authorities said that, due to the construction work taking place as a result of the water main break, the eastbound lanes may have to remain closed throughout the morning and possibly even throughout the entire day today.
