Teaneck to Celebrate Hometown Olympian
Reception planned Thursday to honor olympic medalist from Teaneck.
Olympic Fencer Maya Lawrence will return to her hometown of Teaneck Thursday for a reception hosted by the recreation department, according to the township.
Lawrence, a Teaneck High School graduate, and her team took home the bronze medal at the London games. Lawrence made her way to Olympic achievement after overcoming serious injuries.
She graduated with honors from Princeton University and Columbia University Teachers College. Lawrence started fencing in her sophomore year at Teaneck High School. She worked for the town’s recreation department and is the daughter of Teaneck High School’s head fencing coach, Pat Lawrence.
The event is planned to include dignitaries, residents and local students, according to the township. Sumner Perera, winner of Teaneck Teen Idol 2010, will make a guest appearance.
The reception will be held Nov. 15 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Rodda Center.
