New Arts Cafe to Open on Cedar Lane

Cafe named for famed Teaneck singer, songwriter.

A new cafe featuring live music, poetry and art space will open early next month at the former BLAST location on Cedar Lane.

The new cafe, Phoebe's Place, is named for the late chart-topping musician Phoebe Snow, who grew up in Teaneck, according to the owner's announcement made Wednesday. The cafe will host a range of artists and musicians while serving light and healthy fare.

The Phoebe's Place kitchen will include a menu created by chef Michelle Schotanus, the former owner of Salsa! in Edgewater, and Mind Body and Spirit. It will be BYOB and offer hearty and healthy soups, gourmet salads, sandwiches, burgers, cheese plates and some Mexican dishes, according to Leo Lavoro, a representative for the eatery.

Lunch will be served from noon to 4 p.m. during the week and on weekends, barring any special events. The main kitchen will open Wednesday through Friday from 6 to 10 p.m.

Cafe owner John Bale said in a news release he was inspired by Snow's work.

"With both of us having spent our early years in Teaneck it seemed fitting to dedicate the space to her and to any artist on a journey,” he said.

Bale also comes from an artistic background, having spent years in New York City as a playwriting, actor, producer, director and teacher, the release said.

Phoebe's Place will hold a grand opening Feb. 6 at 7 p.m. at 445 Cedar Lane.

BLAST, a gallery and coffee bar, closed in September.

A full schedule of upcoming events at Phoebe's Place is below:

Wednesday, 2/6 @ 7 p.m. - The first ‘Poetry Man’ Wednesday with Lorraine Sorvino scheduled as the evenings featured poet, with open reading to follow

This is great news for Cedar Lane! Hooray! Let's emphasize the bohemian, progressive, diverse personality of Teaneck. I was a frequent visitor of BLAST! (thank you Scott and Sarah) before it had to close. See you at Pheobe's.

YIPPEE! I can't wait for this to open, so pleased that this is coming to Teaneck not only to honor one of my alltime favorite singers, but also because it is a great concept that will benefit our town (and my social life!).

How exciting. Welcome to Cedar Lane. We'll defnitely be trying that hot soup over the next few weeks. Phoebe and her family were neighbors of ours on Merrison Street and she was a dear friend. She'd be very happy. By the way, she was a regular at Louie's, and I would meet her (sometimes with her daughter, Valerie) there for lunch.

Phoebe's Place will be a great addition to Teaneck and on Cedar Ln. I loved Phoebe Snow's music and It will be great to bring talent together on this side of the GWB. See y'all there.

There's insufficient front parking, no real foot traffic, and too small of a secular population that frequents that portion of Cedar Lane to sustain such a business. They'd be better off taking over the Louie's spot and buying out the adjacent gas station and turning it into parking. Or we could have another pharmacy do just that. Ughhhhh! If there were decent parking by the Teaneck Theater that would make for a GREAT staged location for small concerts and Indie's alike with a specialty eatery as well. Even that however would face a weekly foot traffic problem, limited Saturday daytime visits, and thus be minimally viable given the predominantly Saturday night and Sunday foot traffic potential.

Good news!!!! I hope ALL teaneck residents and others will come support this new business. this is exactly what we need in Teaneck.. NOw we also need apartments to bring foot traffic to stores such as this!

this sounds like a destination anchor that could do wonders. now about that jitney that's been mentioned.......what if there were a nominal cost per ride? would that potentially cover the costs? forgive my ignorance, but i have no idea what something like that costs to run.

When my chauffer can't drop me off directly in front of Phoebe Snow's and I have to drive myself there is plenty of parking behind the establishment. Or, alternatively, I can walk to the place. I do walk to Stop & Shop and I live North of Route 4.

I really don't understand the numerous complaints about lack of parking in Teaneck. Just park in back of the stores and walk around the corner. In Teaneck you don't even have to feed the parking meters as you do in Englewood and Hackensack.

WOuld love to play here some time - please check me out - live here in Teaneck 20 years now - singer songwriter - here is a review of my latest concert - referred to Phoebe and my playing - cool coincidence hey?? www.laurenhooker.com
Written by Richard Skelly For the Asbury Park Press Host of the “Low-Budget Blues Show’’ on WRSU 88.7 FM.
If you miss the late singer-songwriter Phoebe Snow as much as I do, you’ll be happy to know that her native town of Teaneck has no shortage of female blues and jazz talent. Last Saturday, I went to hear vocalist-pianist Lauren Hooker and her Quartet at the Puffin Cultural Forum off Teaneck Road. She played some excellent blues and jazz piano, accompanied by Tim Horner on drums, John Hart on guitar and Martin Wind, bass and cello. She performed a blues song “Countin’ on the Blues,” a song she wrote as a 22-year-old, and her voice, one minute powerful and soulful and the next minute subtle and understated, at times reminded me of Snow, who we lost April 26, 2011 at a rehab/hospice center in Edison. Hooker included a tune by pianist Mal Waldron showcased her lyrics, “Seagulls of Kristiansund,” accompanied by Wind on cello. Hooker also threw in a stirring take on Shirley Horn’s “Here’s To Life.”
