Police Charge Three After Teaneck Merchant Held At Gunpoint

Teaneck detectives track down alleged assailants

Three New York men looking to collect on a debt face kidnapping and robbery charges after they held a Queen Anne Road restaurant owner in the store’s basement and demanded money at gunpoint, police said Thursday.

The trio went to Gateway of India around noon on May 19 looking for the owner, who was said to owe one of the men money, Detective Lt. Andrew McGurr said. The group corralled employees and took the owner into the store’s basement.

The owner had a gun pointed at his head and chest, McGurr said. The three then fled without getting any money.

One of the assailants, Mahavir Singh, had entered into a business deal with the owner and loaned him money, McGurr said. Township detectives and Suffolk County police arrested Singh, 43, of Miller Place, N.Y. on Tuesday and recovered the gun used in the attack along with other weapons, McGurr said.

Two other accused kidnappers both from Babylon N.Y., 34-year-old Zorawar Singh and 28-year-old Leo Sullivan, were also charged.

The three waived extradition and were awaiting transfer from the Suffolk County Jail to New Jersey.

Obviously, this story represents a favorable outcome in a case that could have been tragic... and... without knowledge of the specific details, I congratulate our TPD detectives for their intial response, keen evaluation and swift action in conjunction with Suffolk/ Long Island/New York police officials. Great job!
