PSE&G: Teaneck Outages Could Extend Into Weekend

Work schedule released Monday shows some could remain without electric through Friday.

More than 2,000 Public Service Electric and Gas customers remained without electricity in Teaneck Monday morning, and the latest company estimate shows service might not be fully restored for at least seven days.

According to a PSE&G work schedule updated early Monday, 2,842 of the utility company's 15,892 township customers were without service. The company projected to restore 931 customers on Monday, but 119 customers could remain out Saturday. Another 220 had no estimated restoration time.

The company's estimates have fallen short in the past. An original work schedule projected having all of the town restored last weekend. Another schedule showed an increase in local customers without service.

With temperatures dropping, the township and local churches on Sunday announced warming centers. One center, at Benjamin Franklin Middle School, was setup to allow residents to stay overnight, but closed Monday night.

Most of Cedar Lane's business district was restored Friday and Saturday. Click for a running list of open stores in Teaneck.

The company said it had restored its remaining damaged substations, and brought electricity back for 120,000 customers in the last 24 hours.

"It is still our expectation to have virtually all of our customers back in service by Friday and the majority of our customers before that date," PSE&G said.

The same here Noah, you have done a superb job of keeping all of us informed as to the status of Teaneck and it's power restoration. I only wish that the township would do the same. It was only today that I began receiving email alerts from the township. The alert system the township advertised failed when it was needed the most. It's so nice to get an email telling me how to use a generator safely seven days after people started using a generator.

I have gotten conflicting info from the PSEG website ...the first line says power will be restored by 11:59 pm on Nov 9. The very second line says that power's been restored! But apparently it has not been restored, according to my neighbor who lives in my area. The customer service rep also said power was restored but is relaying our concerns to the field just in case. Meanwhile, my neighbor has seen not one utility truck in our area. We both saw two yesterday, however. What is going on? We can't we get clear, accurate information? All of Teaneck should be back on the grid by now. It's unacceptable.

I agree that Noah has done a terrific job of keeping Teaneck residents informed. Thank you Noah! If it wasn't for your diligent reporting I would have no idea what is going on. I'm still surprised that the leadership of Teaneck has been nearly invisible throughout this crisis. I understand their lives are as disrupted as ours, but when you become an elected leader you have a responsibility to serve your constituents. One way of serving them is to keep them informed during an emergency - FB posts, Tweets, emails and comments on Teaneck Patch. They have been absolutely silent (or to be fair if they have been communicating I haven't had access to it). It is really very disappointing that these are the people we elected to lead our community..

GaryL,

I agree with you on every point except using Facebook, Tweets and other online media for communications during an emergency such as these. All these media types require Internet access or smart phones. Most folks without power may not have been able to charge thier smart phones and many other people do not use smart phones. Also, not everyone uses Facebook or Twitter so these outlets are just not a good idea. When emergency communications are necessary things have to be taken down to a low level that can reach as many people as possible. That means police cars or other township vehicles with load speakers, township employees and volunteers knocking on doors. As archaic as it sounds these methods work best.

Thank you Noah your updates have been very helpful and being able to "vent" a bit on this blog has been at times what I have needed to stay sane. Unfortunately still no power in my area that is between Cedar lane and Route 4, Queen Anne and Teaneck road. How an area that contains the municipal ofices, library, teaneck high, and the police station, can not get priority just is hard to understand. It is unimaginable that it takes 7 days to get power back and there isnt anything that I can do other than to be better prepared for future outages. Didnt think in this day and age that a generator would be a necessity but looks like that is the path I need to take. Power went on for 3 minutes on Friday and then off since - not sure why we can be better informed of what is wrong and what has to be fixed.

Using Facebook for updates is just plain stupid. What about those people that did not have Internet access or have smart phones? Just plain stupid and ignorant. What the hell good are updates if they are only reaching a fraction of the citizens. This is just a plain bone head idea on the Mayor's part. If the mayor didn't figure it out no power = no Internet Access.

GaryL

5:11 pm on Monday, November 5, 2012

I'm glad to hear they have been using FB to share information and I have friended them so their updates appear on my news feed, but why wouldn't they use community social media channels to communicate or set up a series of regular email alerts? By using their personal FB accounts they are reaching only a fraction of the people who live in this town. Mohammed Hameeduddin has 513 FB friends (which is a lot for an individual account), but Teaneck has over 15,000 residents. I can't tell how many FB friends Elie Katz has, but his timeline looks pretty inactive. I applaud their attempt to communicate through social media, but next time they need to think about how to reach as many people as possible not just those on their friend list.

I think using FB/Twitter/email is a great way to communicate during a crisis and most people have cellphones that can access the internet even during a power shortage. But as "Teaneck Resident" pointed out not everyone does. So for those people there needs to be more of a grass roots effort by the town. My point is that there are many different ways to communicate to the residents of Teaneck, but the only one doing anything on a regular basis was Noah at Teaneck Patch. I applaud him for his work, but there needs to be a community wide communication plan and that plan needs to come from our leadership - and it didn't.

I suggest the Township issue daily announcements and post them at preidentified corners - The Fire Dept Fire Alarm boxes. That way, residents know where to go and there is common, verifiable, OFFICIAL information. The Teaneck Police could distribute the notices while on patrol. Teaneck has 23 voting districts. How about four fire alarm poles per district - 92 poles? All that is needed is strong paper and a good copying machine. This idea comes from reading your comments. Whaduhyathink?
As far as Teaneck storm preplanning is concerned, has the Township issued a report where trees are have come down? How old the trees are? What type? What was their condition? A tree expert should inspect and see if we have weakened our town trees due to action (cutting tree roots when replacing sidewalk) or strangulation - lack of space to properly support and feed trees that were planted 85 years ago.

2. Please find out and verify (not via any rumors )that the down did not pay to upgrade our grid. This has to be 100%a accurate as i'm going to rip into the mayor. But I need this to be accurate.

3. Call, email knock on he mayors door and force him to take action. This guy has done nothing during his issue.

I emailed the prez of PSEG last night and also emailed Kathlynn Lynn and Denisa Superville of The Record. Their story about No. Jersey towns still without power conspicuously omitted Teaneck and included no quotes from Teaneck leadership, even though Mr. Katz said he had talked to Denisa (who covers Teaneck). It's possible she omitted his quotes -- these things happen. But I want to know why Teaneck was excluded from the article in the first place! All..I've been on other posts commenting as well abt the lack of adequate communication and leadership shown to us residents during this disaster. Its beyond ridiculous. Last night when i pulled in my driveway from work and saw once again my home in darkness i got pissed all over again. Especially since during my drive from upstate ny to teaneck i had abt 10 robocalls from the town abt polling stations being changed.
I sat in the car doodling so i wouldn't have to go in the cold house. Went on Facebook to waste time and lo and behold i see someone commented on the mayors page. Needless to say i got pissed all over again. Saw that he posted his email address and i sent him a strongly worded email abt everything that we are all complaining abt esp communication to residents directly. If u can call me abt voting on my cell you can call me abt power & heat! Needless to say he responded @ abt 9pm last night and said he drove thru my area & he contacted the governor & pascrelli abt the lack of progress from pseg.

Lets move forward constructively. We have old,, above ground wiring that is prohibitively costly to the tax payer to change. Lets require all new construction to have underground power. Lets ask the town to cut a deal with a generator manufacturer for lower cost per unit generators so more can get one for their homes. Have an emergency notification system just for teaneck that includes many of the items already mentioned here. If you are mad at the town, vote in new leadership. Everyone get out to vote!

Jim - some great ideas. As far as underground wiring or at least cost effective changes, I have been advocating for that for some time. As far as facebook or texting some friends on council for updates, that is ineffective on a 1 to 1 basis and does not serve the great masses of our community. I spoke to other people in other towns who had police cruisers spreading news due to no internet / phone access and other means, but this town is not properly prepared. I informed dozens of people who abandoned town that their power was back by driving by their homes and checking. I have many people with major storm debris [not trees, but broken lawn furniture and other fixtures] but I learned not to put it out yet as town is working on other fronts [elections, tree removal] and this will be shortly scheduled. I passed that along to my friends in similar situation as me with various debris. There must be an emergency plan. Today it is a hurricane. Other times it could be a blizzard. There is also risk of other tragic circumstances, but moving forward change is required. I think a committee should be formed by council with tree specialist, engineers, doctors, EMT, PR and tech specialists to design a comprehensive emergency plan. NOW, not a week before the next hurricane or blizzard.

Jason Flynn

11:51 am on Tuesday, November 6, 2012

Knowing the Mayor had a baby born during the storm should give him a pass to some extent on this storm. We also MUST understand that there are thousands of workers working on over TWO MILLION people without power in the area - these people abandoned their families and are doing very dangerous work.

However, what I have tried to communicate to the town council and DPW multiple times through various means recently and for some time is that we are just doing "BAND AID" service. Until we REMOVE 50 - 125 foot monstrous trees along our power lines and curbs we not only endanger our electric, phone and cable supply, we put all of our residents, including thousands of children in severe danger daily, as they walk to / from school or to a bus stop.

I am not suggesting we should remove all trees and let our town look bare. There are many wonderful species of gorgeous trees that have a height capacity of 20 feet or less, with very strong roots, etc. The town could hire some professional consultants to analyze the right replacement products. However, the town must understand, until Teaneck fixes their huge overgrown, old dangerous tree issues on each and every curb in town, our power is always suspect in any type of storm and our children continued to be exposed to very real dangers, let alone the live wires falling limbs cause.

Jason,

I like your idea about the installing generators at the community center so it can be used for emergencies. The closest one we had was BCC. Waiting a week for a warming center just was not very good. But will the town even listen to the ideas of dealing with the trees and the community center?

Teanecker

12:06 pm on Tuesday, November 6, 2012

I agree that some of these trees, majestic as they are, pose a danger. On several streets I have noted how dangerously they lean over. As for the Mayor, while I'm sympathetic to the knowledge that his wife just had a baby by C-section, this is what he signed up for. This is why he was elected. If he can't balance his professional and civic obligations with his personal and family ones -- especially in difficult, crisis-level times -- he and others like him shouldn't be in local politics. To his credit, he is being responsive to residents' fears and concerns and no doubt trying to do what he can, but I can't help feeling that Teaneck leadership is really powerless -- no pun intended -- to change the pace of restoration of power to all of the town. And I do wish they had figured out a way to communicate better with residents -- both those who are digitally savvy and those who rely on communication the old-fashioned way. And he should have been quoted in Kathleen Lynn's recent story in The Record. I don't understand why neither he nor members of the Council weren't in there with a quote about Teaneck's light plight.

I see a concensus growing that Teaneck has remained too exposed to potential natural events - storms. My concern is also the rails. Many Teaneckers live quite close to the CSX line. Derailments are a low probability event in any given place but they happen nearly everyday in the US. I am told the township has an emergency response plan but citizens (or even elected officials) are not allowed to see it. I think the Council should consider whether this is necessary or not. Right now, it is clear there has been a serious lack of communication. Reverse 911 doesn't work when there is no phone service and there is no phone service when our trees are prone to being blown over. What is in the Teaneck emergency response plan that residents could use? I don't know. Useful portions of the document should be made public and soon. One idea: Where can refrigerated drugs be kept so they spoil? Another idea: Have a debriefing session so residents can share their experiences, ideas, and inform the council/manager about resident needs/priorities.

On a "reasonable budget" Teaneck must set up a plan with the trees all around our curbs and wires AND emergency plan. We are blessed to have an amazing community center, with 2 large gyms, many classrooms, conference rooms and other resources. If that building had a few large generators installed and some other protective measures, the community could at least have a DAY 1 SHELTER / INFO - HELP DESK / water / hot drinks center in case of an emergency, like last week. Rather, majority of Teaneck lingered in the dark.

I fully understand that we are the "lucky ones". Many towns are mostly destroyed and people lost life. However, hundreds of us have young children in their home. Many have medical conditions. Many are elderly [with no smart phone].

I don't think some of these ideas are rocket science and creating a committee to address this should be relatively simple, free of politics and budget friendly. We waited nearly a week for a first "warming center" in Teaneck to open up, and it was a TBOE building, not the township rec center!!!

I've spoken to a friend from Ridgefield Park who even without power has been kept abreast of all on-going efforts during this time. Even having town police enforcement running up and down with bull horns. She informed me the town has worked on implementing a plan for times like this, keeping everyone informed from school to polling and has worked as a mediator with PSEG. I think that's called being organized and having a local government that has the foresight and interest of betterment for their community. We can excuse that things don't always go to plan and as humans we make mistakes but the LACK of hands-on participation is very disheartening. Using FB/Twitter as a form of communications is called CYA - used very often when communicating via email "....but I sent the email..." what about following up???????? DISGRACEFUL!!!!!!

I got a response back from Julia Brailey as a result of my email to Mr. Izzo. I'm ready to scream in frustration. The out of town crews are not connected to PSEG so we can't get live updates on progress or lack thereof. How inept is this? How stupid? Sent this to the Mayor asking for his update if any.

Your email to Ralph Izzo was referred to me for attention.

Review of the most recent report which is posted on our web site at www.pseg.com shows that Teaneck currently has approx 3,118 customers without power.

Because of the large number of out of state workers who are assisting in the restoration and are not connected to our central computer system we are not able to give live updates. I can confirm we do have your order in our system and crews will remain in the area until every customer is safely restored.

We appreciate your patience

Teaneck_Resident, it is not a perfect idea, but they are starting points. It is not right next to the river. If only a section of town has major issues, it does not interrupt our public schools, has a 2nd floor if need to get everyone above ground level, not right next to residences, police can set-up a temp-unit in one of the offices, has some parking - this is not rocket science. We just need a group of people in our leadership devoted to getting things done. I dont want to hear we cannot afford these things. 3 times in 15 months is enough - time to get this done now. Hopefully it is never needed, but to have things like this facility available for thousands of us and it is sitting idle without power all week is very disturbing.

On another front, I think we, as a community, should thank the TBOE, the school administrators and staff and, most of all, our children's teachers for opening school this coming Thursday and Friday. The teachers were not contracted to teaching these days and putting our children first should be recognized by all!!!

I am sorry that I can’t be more specific. The number of customers out of service in the state is currently reported at 272,700That number is decreasing every hour but we cannot guarantee a restoration time for anyone at this time.

Can you share some of their answers with us? I recently emailed the Mayor again. No answer yet.

Teanecker,

I would but they emailed me directly so it wouldn't be proper and I don't feel right doing so. The mayor did respond and did so very well and professionally. Perhaps send him another email? It's possible that your original message got caught by a spam filter.

I just got a call from a neighbor that she saw our porch light on at Monterey Ave, at 3:38 p.m. Could it be? Maybe. If we have power then hopefully all of you do as well. Fingers crossed!

II hope you do have power. But don't count on it being on for long, the coming Nor'easter is going to wreck things again.

How much more frustrated can i get....
Rcv'd a call from FEMA @ 2:45pm that they'll be at my home in an hour to asses damage. I leave wrk in Monsey NY & race there b/c according to the FEMA rep they are not avail after business hrs.
Get there and the gentleman from California says 'Oh this house is freezing!'....Really Mr.FEMA , I never noticed. Maybe its the no power/heat and hot water in my neighborhood that's causing the chill u feel.
What is the newest update on this. Anyone getting any valid feedback?

Folks how are we doing power wise this morning? I'm getting ready for the Nor-easter that is going to hit us this evening which probably means that again Teaneck will be in the dark.

Please know that we got our power back on yesterday afternoon and the businesses on the streets around the intersection of Teaneck Rd, Minell Place and Grayson Ave also seem to be powered again. I hope Grayson, Cranford, Edgemont etc are all "normal" once again. I have sent an email of thanks to Elie Katz and suggested a community "town hall" meeting where residents and leaders can brainstorm ideas and learnings to safeguard the safety and wellbeing of residents, communicate more effectively, etc. should there be future crises of this magnitude. And no doubt there will be. We need to learn from this event and plan and implement accordingly for the future. I've been really heartened, not to say, impressed, by some of the ideas expressed here!

Indeed Cranford Place finally got power late yesterday ....now fingers crossed that this new storm doesn't have us in the dark again. Many thanks to Noah and to all of you for helping to keep the information flowing.
