PSE&G: Repair Crews to Focus on 14 Bergen Towns

Company says Teaneck is among towns where crews are focused this weekend.

UPDATE: More Than Half of Teaneck Still Without Power, PSE&G Data Shows

Teaneck is one of more than a dozen Bergen County towns where Public Service Electric and Gas repair crews will be focusing efforts over the weekend, the company said Saturday morning.

"Crews will be focusing on Teaneck, Englewood, Ridgewood, Fort Lee, Paramus, Bergenfield, Palisades Park, New Milford, River Edge, Glen Rock, Tenafly, Hackensack, Lodi and Bogota this weekend," the statement said.

Power was restored to more areas of Teaneck, including on some business districts of Cedar Lane and Teaneck Road, on Friday. Still, large areas of the town remained without service days since Sandy struck.

In a statement Saturday, Gov. Chris Christie announced utility companies had met his demand that they provide updated projected outage and restoration information to the public.

Service was out to 8,019 of Teaneck's 15,892 PSE&G customers, according to data released by Christie's office Saturday afternoon. Power was expected to be restored by late Saturday, the data showed.

As the estimated restoration time approached, large sections of the town remained in the dark while others saw service restored. PSE&G's outage map showed between 5,001 and 10,000 customers out late Saturday, down from the more than 10,000 reported for days after the storm.

Many Teaneck residents have reported PSE&G's customer service website continued to say power will be back Nov. 9. A PSE&G spokesman could not provide additional details when reached earlier Saturday.

Of 333,690 PSE&G customers in Bergen County, 215,770 lost electricity, according to the company. As of Saturday morning, the utility reported 142,100 remained without service in the county.

"Also in the last 24 hours we energized all of our switching stations and restored 16 substations. While energizing switching and substations does not automatically turn the lights on, it is a major step forward and allows to focus on our distribution systems that are closer to the customer," the PSE&G statement said.

PSE&G also announced it had established a mobile customer service center, offering charging stations, water and ice at the Paramus Park Mall. The center is open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

More than 2,000 outside workers were called to help PSE&G and another 600 were expected to arrive, according to PSE&G.

Click to download a full list of local outage numbers and restoration times, provided by the Governor's Office.

The reality is no one is in charge of PSE&G that gives a hoot about the retail (homeowner) customer. We don't appear at rate hearings and don't let anyone know how we feel except at times like now. Those who own PSE&G stock should complain at shareholders meetings.

Hackensack seems to be an afterthought because the apartment buildings in my area, Euclid & Grand have been without power, people have fled to other areas, Main Street is dark (South of Sears) and I've yet to see any trucks or work crews. I'm not very encouraged. - James Bird

Noah- Thank you for the information. I am using my phone so I will ask. Did I read the spreadsheet correctly that Teaneck k is scheduled to be restores on 11/03/2012 at 23:59? Is this estimate for the whole township of Teaneckthe or just certain sections. Also, what happens if they do not meet the deadline?

You are correct. That is what the spreadsheet says for the remaining approx 8,000 customers who are out. There's nothing specific on what happens if they don't meet that estimate, but we'll keep the updates coming.

I'm so sick of this whole situation. PSEG is inept. They hold a monopoly over the entire state...yet when people are trying to contact them for help...or hope...just to get an idea when they might get power back.... you can't get a hold of them. Or, if you do...they pretty much tell you, "we don't know". I hope the state learned by this mess, and consider allowing more energy companies to come in, possibly divide the state in to districts, and give different power companies districts... PSEG has proven they are unable to respond to the needs of the state.

What really boils my blood is, I heard that PSEG dedicated a lot of man power and resources into restoring the MetLife Arena in the Meadowlands, this past week, so that we have football today. Cause I guess football is more important than say, heat or power to half a million people still sitting in the dark...cold. PSEG you FAIL.

Hurricane Irene I lost power for 8 days. Didn't lose power during snow storm, but I'm on day 7 with no power for Hurricane Sandy. (East Cedar Lane, Teaneck) I'm getting used to this which is sad. I see posts from so many people on facebook that I work with that have power restored from little towns to big cities, yet Teaneck which was top 3 PSEG towns that were affected has about 50% without power.

Ok folks, so there's lots of talk about frustration with both PSEG and the Township's lack of communication, myself included. However, the question is, once things get back to normal, what will we do about this with both PSEG and the Township?

There will be the usual useless town meetings where PSEG reps will answer questions, nod there heads and try and shut everyone up. PSEG will give the usual lip service about this being an unprecedented storm causing more damage and outages than the previous storm. If many of you have not noticed this is PSEG's usual excuse. Each storm causes more damage than the previous. Hurricane Irene caused unprecedented damage, then the October snow storm caused more damage than Irene, then Sandy even more. I understand that these were tough storms, but it does show that PSEG cannot properly plan and respond to storm damage yet they can very well give people a run around and excuses.

So there are two choices.

A. Everyone walks away after life gets back to normal and then whine and whine once this happens again.

B. We take action, hold the township responsible for their abysmal lack of communication and we force the township to force PSEG to make those infrastructure changes that need to be made in order to stabilize power to Teaneck.

So which route do the residents of want to take? I say B, however that is just me. If not you'll be back in the cold and dark during the next big storm.

B all the way. Let's get clear on what the local emergency communication plan is, publicize it and make sure we elect leaders who are committed to serving the greater good even in times of emergency. Here's a piece of low-hanging fruit: What happened to the emergency notification system? I am signed up but haven't received a single text or email. If we need a back up for that system, let's get it in place.

Calvin

I think Teaneck should have an emergency relief initiative. Meaning we have supplies, gas, water, generators, blankets, on hand for emergencies. Let's not put this in the hands of a corporation. While I do receive updates from Ellie Katz, I have yet to see any statements by Hameduddin which is amazing. I know he just brought a child into this world, but we need his leadership in troubled times. I look at Corey Booker's tweets(I work in newark and he went to my h.s.) and he is replying to residents and if anyone is older and needs help he is asking them to call him and he will go there, talk to them, give them blankets, etc. We need more people like that. I read online you can charge your cellphones at the police station, but if you don't have internet how would people know. How about announcing it via fire truck on the streets or putting up signs. There so much that could be done. I don't blame the PSEG workers, but I do blame PSEG for false estimates and lack of preparation.

Comment_arrow

Teaneck_Resident

Well put Calvin, I am cutting Hameduddin a bit of slack because he just had a new born but not even one text, email or call during this whole fiasco shows that he is not up to the job. He has been non-existent during this hole issue as were all the other council members other than Ellie Katz. I'm not patting myself on the back but at least I got out my chainsaw and axe and cut firewood for my neighbors and siphoned gas from my car for those that have generators. Booker made himself available, as far as Hameduddin I think he's done come next elections.

And yes, the Teaneck, emergency alert system is a joke. I got one call before Sandy and that is it. All calls were going to my home phone which accepted both inbound and outbound calls. What annoys me most is that how is the township alerting those residents that do not have Internet access or very basic cell service (if any cell phone at all)? My two elderly neighbors do not have Internet access and I was thier only "update service". Teaneck needs to get their act together and realize that not communications need to still occur in very basic forms.

I work in IT and have designed many data centers and while they work very well I tell any person to never rely on their cell phone or Internet access for emergency info. Many of these communications systems fail during a disaster.
