Englewood Rabbi Shmuley Boteach, a bestselling author and onetime spiritual adviser to Michael Jackson, is running for Congress as a Republican in the redrawn 9th District.

The Bergen County Republican Organization's Policy Committee voted to support Boteach ahead of Thursday’s county party convention, according to a message posted on Boteach’s Twitter account.

“We declared today. I hope you will all be with me. You give me strength,” Boteach said via Twitter.

In an interview with TheHill.com, Boteach said Jewish values taught him to believe in Republican ideals of “limited government and personal responsibility.”

"America's following Kim Kardashian," he said, the website reported. "The insipid, shallow culture has overtaken politics as a principle form of entertainment."

The high-profile rabbi has authored more than 20 books, including bestseller “Kosher Sex.”

Boteach supports school vouchers, a flat tax and wants to make marital counseling tax deductible as a way to lower the divorce rate, according to a Jewish Telegraphic Agency report.

The rabbi is competing against Saddle Brook Republicans Blasé Billack, a professor at St. John’s University, and Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission Senior Technician Bruce Wrede. 

Democrats are engaged in a hotly contested primary fight between Rep. Steve Rothman and Rep. Rep. Bill Pascrell.
