Route 15 Could Become Ronald Reagan Memorial Highway

Republican legislators propose naming a highway in northwestern New Jersey for the nation's 40th president.

"The Great Communicator" may soon have a stretch of New Jersey highway named after him.

Under a bill introduced earlier this year by Republican legislators in the Deomcrat-controlled Assembly, the late President Ronald Reagan would have a state highway in northwestern New Jersey named in his honor, according to a report in the Star-Ledger.

Only one former president — Warren Harding — has received such as an accolade in New Jersey, with a stretch of Route 48 in Salem County named in his honor.

If approved by the state Assembly and Senate, and then signed by Gov. Christie, the legislation would designate Route 15, a 19.5-mile state highway in northwestern New Jersey, as the "Ronald Reagan Memorial Highway."

Reagan died in 2004.

This is why this country is so SCREWED UP! Why don't you name the highway after a war veteran or policeman or fireman that gave their life to PROTECT the very road or community they PROTECTED! Did Ronald Reagan ever travel Route 15?

Why don't we just declare that Reagan is God and be done with it?

What I find most amusing about all the reverence for him is that if he were to try running today he wouldn't be nearly right wing enough for the Republican party as it currently exists.

The point is always for the politicians pushing the name change can associate themselves with the person they are changing the name to. It's like one great big taxpayer funded commercial.

As far as I know, Ronald Reagan already has at least three highways and a tollway, not to mention an airport, the usual library, etc.

Possibly, but if you fall asleep while driving your Reagan down the Reagan highway, you might just crash and have to have Reagan ambulance service take you to Reagan hospital. If you're lucky and survive you won't have to be buried in Reagan cemetery, but can instead take a vacation, taking off aboard a Reagan47 from the Reagan National Reagan on your vacation to Reagan.

No respect. If you have no respect for the Man then at least have some for the office. Former President Reagan is no longer alive to kick around. You may have agreed or disagreed with what he did as President, but I think most can agree that he did what he thought was best for the country.
I believe that there can be a spirited debate on the merits of naming a public facility or road for a previous President. But mean-spirited comments like falling asleep while driving should not be part of it.
This is why nothing is getting done in this country. People just like to belittle those who don't hold the same opinions they do.

Art - plenty of comics and late night hosts have made jokes at Reagan's expense. You obviously think that Ronnie was/is some kind of deity, and should be on Mt. Rushmore. Under Reagan, the gov'mnt expanded and the national debt greatly increased. So, stop with the false outrage. Nothing is done in the country due to Republican stonewalling and underhanded tactics.

Reagan gave us "trickle-down economics" or at least popularized the idea. This is the proposition that if you overfeed the horse sufficiently, there will be enough undigested oats in its droppings to feed the field-mice.

Should call Route 206 Willie Spranger Highway, at least in the Andover, Byram and Newton areas. The name might not mean anything when you look at it but if you remember good ole Wavin Willie then this will all make sense. For 40 years Willie waved to all of us and he should be immortalized somehow.

To RidgewoodGuy12,
Boy are you wrong. I am and always have been a registered Independent. I didn't vote for Reagan and was surprised when we didn't launch a first strike against the USSR the day after he entered office.
Since this is the norm for society today, I can longer be outraged. I can however fear for the future of our country if people like you continue to spout hate for those you disagree with. Our only hope is to break the cycle of blame and honestly debate the problems we as a country are facing.

And unlike all those streets named after MLK and a whole host of other people, places, things and events, the highway that will be named after Reagan won't change names every time it crosses city boundaries. That IMO is a good thing. Having the same street change names a half dozen times in a ten minute or so drive just b/c you cross from one town to the next is real annoying.

I personally don't care what it is called. Let's just call this road the exact same thing for the entire length of the road like they should be doing w/ every single road. Pretty dumb to have roads change names multiple times over a stretch of a few miles all b/c you go from one town to the next.

Just one opinion,
It's just that I believe strongly in a small government that operates on the bare minimum of costs. To change the highway's name might cost something, and who is supposed to pay for it? I'm sick and tired of people trying to spend away other people's (aka. "my") hard earned money. These Ronald Reagan Highway people are nothing but a bunch of communists and socialists, the lot of them. They should get jobs and build their own road and stop asking for handouts, robbing us responsible ones of the money we worked hard for. the problem with socialism is you eventually run out of other people's money. And don't these people live in Salem County? Why should I care about what they want? I live in Bergen county. I don't owe them anything. Their interests are not my responsibility. Its not the job of government to give them stuff. To redistribute wealth. I'm on the side of the taxpayers. In fact, there shouldn't even be such things as taxes. The founding fathers didn't intend for there to be.

There have only been 44 Presidents- each one, including our current one (hard to admit) are entitled to such an honor. Decades from now, people may not remember President Reagan or other prominent leaders. It is unfortunate that we have to name roads and buildings after them, but it is how we immortalize them.

If the people on this site are so against naming a road after Reagan because he was a conservative, shame. He is entitled to the same respect as the liberal Presidents we have had. I put up as an example JFKennedy, other than getting shot while President, what exactly was his contribution to the Country? How many roads, schools, libraries, etc are named after JFK?

Averting the Cuban Missile Crisis is a big one Luca. I have no problem if a stretch of road near his old house was named after him, but why is it necessary to name some stretch of road in NJ after him? Bill Clinton was a great president, I don't see anyone asking anything to be named for him.

Billy-Not-His-True-Name has never been to Cuba, and he knows very little about what went on there in the past and goes on there now, including how repressive the Castro regime has been for over 50 years.

Ask yourself why some of the Cuban people have risked life and limb attempting to escape from the island country over the past fifty years.

Part of the deal Kennedy made with Khrushchev to resolve the removal of the Soviet Union's missiles in Cuba during the so-called crisis was that 1) The United States would remove its missiles in Turkey (pointed at the Soviet Union) and 2) The United States would never attack or invade Cuba.

This averted the so-called crisis; but if Kennedy only knew at the time that the U.S. arsenal of intercontinental ballistic missiles far out numbered the Soviet Union's arsenal he could have blown the Soviet Union back to the stone age, and included Cuba in the mix as well. Castro would have had to resort to shining shoes to survive.

There are so many roads, highways, bridges, airports, etc. named after Kennedy because in Democratic-controlled venues that is how it works. Ronald Reagan, a Republican, has very little political support in New Jersey; hence the big stink about Route 15.

There is a Clinton, New Jersey, but it has an appropriate Red-Light District with numerous women named Monica, Paula, and Gennifer working nights as first class employees.
