Sections of Teaneck Could See Power Restored Within Hours

Electricity restored to the Cedar Lane business district Friday afternoon.

Power was restored Friday afternoon to the Cedar Lane business district and more Teaneck residents could see the lights come back on within the next several hours, officials said.

Township Manager William Broughton said utility crews were working at the Palisade Avenue substation, and he was told service could be restored to some areas east of the railroad trucks served by the facility.

Broughton said Public Service Electric and Gas crews, along with out-of-state teams, were deployed in Teaneck.

"They informed Township officials that a significant portion of the Township east of the railroad tracks will have power restored once damaged circuits are repaired and the substation is fully operational," a statement issued using the town's e-mail alert system said. "PSE&G reported that the estimated time for this particular restoration was several hours."

Electricity was restored to Teaneck's Fairleigh Dickinson University campus and the West Englewood Avenue-area, west of the railroad tracks, he said. Some residents might experience outages while workers test circuits.

Utility crews were also working near Teaneck Road and Voorhees Street, and the Rensselaer Road-area, the manager said. Key township facilities, including the Richard Rodda Center and Municipal Building, were also without electricity.

Township public works crews have cleared about 95 trees, but at least another 100 remained, Broughton said.

Still, large areas of the town remained without service. According to PSE&G's outage map, more than 10,000 township customers were out Friday afternoon. The number has gone unchanged for days after Sandy hit. A spokesperson for PSE&G did not immediately respond to a request for comment Friday morning.

Gov. Chris Christie on Thursday said thousands of outside repair crews were headed to New Jersey, and he would tell utility companies to issue revised restoration timelines to customers.

County Police Lt. Dwane Razetti, Bergen's emergency management director, said federal officials were expected to deliver blankets and other supplies to the county for distribution to municipalities. More than a hundred people remained sheltered Friday at the police academy in Mahwah.

Yes...if people sit down now pseg and the township will just laugh at us and stop working. Notice that the township manager has been MIA until we organized a protest. But keep it peaceful and no arrests.

What is everyone's definition of "several hours"? I can't believe a township like Teaneck thinks this lack of response fron PSEG is acceptable!

MP

5:51 pm on Friday, November 2, 2012

I guarantee the township manager was too busy actually working to get your power restored to be reading the comments on Teaneck Patch regarding your loosely organized protest. By all means, if you're unhappy with your officials write them a letter, email, etc. But realize that if the power just came on in several parts of Teaneck it clearly means they HAVE been working on the situation--it's not a matter of flipping a switch to get the power back on. Be grateful for the good news, it means your turn is coming. Rather than patting yourselves on the back because you were willing to stand in the cold for an hour or two to protest, give the people who ACTUALLY did something productive some credit (Police, Fire, ems, AND PSEG!)

Agreed! From what I have seen and heard, the township manager has been running ragged trying to keep everything going, and PSE&G and the police have been doing as well as they could -- indeed, they have been working hard and fast, but the magnitude of this event was simply insane. Coordination with the out of state crews has been a problem but I don't see an easy solution other than phasing in industry wide standards for radios, etc. No demonstrations or governor's demands will change how they work -- they don't like being electrocuted and they have a LOT on their plate.

Thanks noah. To be specific it's all the streets on the west side of sussex from West Englewood Ave to the New Milford border.

I emailed Stephen Hawking and told him that it is possible to live in a black hole.

Janu/gnawn,

I'm still out of power as well. From experience it seems that the section if town west of sussex and north of FDU all the way up to the new Milford border is the last to be restored. I don't know what substation feeds our specific area.

I talked to them earlier and they said there were utility trucks from out of state there. Does anybody have power in that area yet?

By 6:15 the reported crews at Voorhees St. were gone and there is no power on Voorhees st. Not sure what they did because the major downed power line is still there with a big tree wrapped around it. It's good to see lots of other streets next to us got power. But just wish it was us.

Noah, are you ever in communication with the Teaneck mayor Mohammed Hameeduddin or any other local government officials? It would seem to me that one important duty of these government leaders would be to give updates to their towns on the status of power restoration and so forth, delivered personally just as the governor of the state does. Perhaps it's unfair to criticize them for doing nothing, if that's the status quo of local government. In any case, any insight as to why these elected leaders are completely absent during these times of crisis? (well, in times of mini crisis here, but still...). What did they do, seek refuge in Highland Park?

Night 6...no heat, power or hot water. Yes im grateful for the roof over my head (though it's damaged by the townships tree), It could be worse as others have lost everything including their lives.
Tell me once again why our towns leadership shouldn't be raked over the coals for their lack of communication and service to the community that they supposedly represent. They find my house when its election time but cant find it when im freezing cold! I dare anyone of them to ask to put a dam sign on my lawn or for my vote!

For all the Einsteins who are busy raking the town's leadership over the coals, you should know that a couple of them have been reaching out to residents TOWNWIDE with updates. It would probably be a good idea for you to get onto their email list so they can reach out to you as well. They were also out of power for the week.

PSE&G told me my power had been restored - I live on Phelps Road - but we don't have power. They said they would submit another work order, but I can't recall ever seeing a repair truck in our neighborhood. I wonder if their "power restored" report is simply a way to show progress even if the power hasn't been restored.

LaVerne -- while I applaud your spirit of volunteerism, I still think it acceptable for someone with no power or heat, especially if there are children or elderly in the home, to express frustration and wonder at the situation. I can't afford to move into a hotel. I threw out lots of food. I don't have a generator. And I'm at work now. People who don't have homes are surely to be pitied and for those who can help, an object of help. But those of us who are trying to resume a semblance of life and work (and that work is very often in a service industry on which many others rely) to call us cry babies when we are simply trying to get information is a touch insensitive. Should someone tell you to stop wasting time on your computer and go volunteer? Did your post add to anyone's sense of community and improvement? Or was it judgmental and divisive, assuming a superior tone when it didn't reflect any actual superiority in performance? So if you want to volunteer, feel free to do so to help people who have no homes. I woke up shivering at 4AM and am just now starting to thaw out while I am at work. If you can find someone to volunteer to help me that'd be fine, too. Sorry that my suffering isn't great enough.

GET A LIFE!
I'm sure people in the real world are laughing at you crying that your power isn't on while people have lost everything.
...try remembering what many went through with Katrina, Tsunami. and you are crying about being cold and in the dark! You want to find help then get out and then I've seen PSEG & Broughton.
