Should Congress, Federal Workers, VP Get Pay Raises?

President Barack Obama signed an executive order last week calling for the pay raises, according to reports. Do you agree with the move? One Fort Lee resident calls on people to speak out on the issue.

Editor's Note: United Republican Club of Fort Lee vice president Keith Jensen submitted the following Op-Ed to Patch for publication:

To be a leader and accept a raise when you know it is in error, was given as political patronage, or when the salary and benefits are simply not justified relative to the reality of our economy does not demonstrate greatness; especially as a public official.

It can be done. Freeholders Hermansen and Driscoll took a 25 percent pay cut for their positions when they took office, and I ask for bi-partisan comments where others have done so alike.

When I was in the Army, there was an administrative error where I was being promoted to 1LT six months ahead of schedule because at the time it was mandatory to remain in rank for two years. I had brought that up to my S1 (Battalion admin officer). Consequently, my promotion was put back on track.

To our newly elected representatives, congratulations on your new victory. I hope my request falls on noble ears, and I ask that people speak out on the President's recent executive order, thus giving pay raises to the VP and many others, according to this Huffington Post article.

Even as Congressman Rothman leaves, he can notably make a statement in principal on this. With the others being re-elected, it would be great to hear them take a position too. Please let them know:

When the senate and the house can not help the USA, their country and ours, out of the "fiscal crisis" they do not deserve and should not get any pay raises...

Some Representatives are listening. Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., introduced legislation Monday that would rescind the pay raises. Alaska's senators and others are joining a growing group of lawmakers urging President Obama to rescind a recent executive order granting pay increases to Congress and other federal officials, saying the move doesn't jive with the country's debt crisis.

Michele Bachmann is a nut job!!!
Even the republicans believe that the Tea Party is ruining the republican's stellar reputation. I'd check facts before I write publicly...FactCheck.org is a good one...lots of rumors by quite a few ignorant media writers out there...pay raises didn't go through.

In reality we've gone over the fiscal cliff. They all earmark 5 billion, yes 5 billion dollars in projects that have nothing to do with the Sandy Disaster Bill. (Because we have an unlimited bank account) and now they are going to get raises. Its just beyond belief. Oh what the Hell, raise some more bridge tolls. We'll pay for them!

The timing seems extremely suspect. In the middle of another failure of bipartisanship, out of the blue, Obama announces a pay raise. Although it is modest, it certainly cannot be a commentary on performance, as Congress has demonstrated a total failure to represent its constituency, instead choosing to focus only on partisan politics.

Well, No raises. But our budget is not in any better shape. Put it in perspective:

* U.S. Tax revenue: $ 2,170,000,000,000
* Fed budget: $ 3,820,000,000,000
* New debt: $ 1,650,000,000,000
* National debt: $ 14,271,000,000,000
* Recent budget cuts: $ 38,500,000,000

Let's now remove 8 zeros and pretend it's a household budget:

* Annual family income: $ 21,700
* Money the family spent: $ 38,200
* New debt on the credit card: $ 16,500
* Outstanding balance on the credit card: $ 142,710
* Total budget cuts so far: $ 38.50

Bring this home to Fort Lee. While we are in debt, we are still trying to take on another $3.5Million dollars on a speculative real estate investment while putting two operating companies out of business, which causes those employees to lose their jobs. Anyone know where the dozen employees from Cosmos are working now? Did the Mayor and Council find them a job as they may soon be doing for one of our Councilman if he steps down?

Back on subject, our Federal Govt. has no business raising ALL (and the lions share will be bared by the 'middle class' however that is defined by them), and locally we will be raising taxes again to fund this potential real estate deal: http://fortlee.patch.com/articles/fort-lee-gop-starts-petition-to-stop-acquisition-of-main-street-property

Tell your elected officials at every level you have had enough, or continue to just pay your tax bill without any irk.

Where are the spending cuts to offset the Mayors' increased borrowing and spending?
I just got my first 2013 paycheck - less to spend as payroll taxes increased to cover Federal spending and borrowing.
Our household budget is circling the drain.
