Snowstorm May Produce 4 Inches on Saturday

Northern New Jersey to see all snow and no ice or rain from fast-moving storm, expert says.

A low-pressure system originating from the Gulf of Mexico headed for the Northeast will make for a snowy Saturday in northern New Jersey, according to the National Weather Service.

The fast-moving storm that has deposited precipitation in other parts of the country will likely produce 2 to 4 inches of snow in Bergen, Hudson, Passaic, Union and Essex counties Saturday, with areas to the north and west—Morris, Somerset, Sussex and Warren counties—likely seeing less, meteorologist Lauren Nash said.

“We’re still somewhat uncertain about the absolute track of the storm,” Nash said, “but it seems very likely northern New Jersey will get just snow and no rain or ice.”

The snowfall is expected to begin around 7 a.m. Saturday, Nash said, and should subside about 12 hours later. A chance of flurries and light snowfall is possible through midnight, Nash said.

Travelers heading east Saturday could see hazardous conditions as well, Nash said, as New York City and Long Island are expected to see more of a rain and ice mix from the storm.

The storm is expected to pick up steam as it reaches the coast around the Virginia and North Carolina border, Nash said. Wind gusts during and after the storm could reach 30 miles per hour.

If forecasts hold true, this would be the second measurable snowfall this week in northern New Jersey as snow, rain and ice coated on the region Wednesday.

This article is posted on Patch sites across Warren, Morris, Sussex, Somerset, Bergen, Passaic, Hudson, Union and Essex counties.

The past two decades have seen strong warming during the summer and early autumn over the Arctic, which has caused unprecedented melting of sea ice. The result is more moisture in the atmosphere, which, in turn, results in increased precipitation over the northern Eurasian continent – where it is still cold enough in the autumn to fall as snow rather than rain."

Global warming, global cooling, climate change, etc.. Call it what you want but the bottom line is that this is one of the many cycles the earth is going through in its lifetime. It's just that this time there are some folks to record it and those who want to blow it out of proportion for financial gain. If we had the same folks with the same mentality back eons ago they would blaming flatulent dinosaurs for the hole in the ozone layer and blaming the cavemen for finding fire. Who do you blame for the increase in the sun's solar flares helping to increase the temperature or how the distance from the Sun to the Earth is slowly decreasing?

I have always said "Follow the money trail" to know the real story. Is it just a coincidence that Al Gore is a major player/owner of the company that deals with companies that buy "carbon credits"? And who do they buy those "carbon credits from? Big Al's company. So he gets richer while the world continues to get dirtier. Oh yeah, by the way, Obama was part of, and still has an open seat on the Board of Directors for The Chicago Carbon Exchange.

to finish my comment - In the meantime the US is fighting to lead the way (at our expense) and carry the sole weight to clean up the situation, but have you looked at what's taking place around the world? Coal powered plants are still popping up all over the world, smog belching vehicles still are being driven and and major polluting businesses in neighboring countries freely operate regardless of what the US power brokers would like you to believe. It's like we all went to the community plunge for a swim except that we're the only ones NOT peeing in the pool, and WE (US taxpayers) have to pay more for this "privilege".

What’s the matter with you people anyway? Don’t you know this awful four inch snow storm occurring mid-winter, Dec. 29, 2012, in central New Jersey, (located about halfway between the Equator and the North Pole) is cause by man’s careless actions to our planet? Don’t you know if Cap and Tax had passed as originally intended and we were paying $7.00 for a gallon of gas, and $10.00 a gallon for home heating oil, and saw our electric bill double or triple by now; it wouldn’t be snowing as we speak, and we'd all be saved?

But your children will feel it in new diseases, drought, sky high food prices, especially for fish, coffee, chocolate and pasta. Durum wheat production in the Dakotas is already endangered. Polar ice melt will put all of lower Manhattan underwater by the time your children are middle aged. There will be massive fish die offs. But go ahead and keep laughing. I'm not sure what you believe that lifespan data proves, but think for a moment:

No matter what sort of country or medical system you are raised under (for simplicity, presume there are no medical breakthroughs whatsoever during your lifetime), your life expectancy must still increase from the time of your birth. The reason is that all those who share your birth date who have already died--in infancy, in childhood, or at any age less than yours--are no longer counted in the statistical life expectancy for those who are still left alive. If you keep dropping lower numbers from the average, the average goes up.

So, your life expectancy at ANY age will always be at least slightly longer than your current age, no matter how old you get, because you have already proved that you are capable of reaching your current age. The only question is how much longer you will actually live. (The question of how long ago you actually died would clearly be absurd.)

So now that you changed subjects Geronimo, could you tell me how segregation and keeping women in the kitchen have anything to do with Global Warming?

Also, I may be an old dinosaur, but remember this. We old dinosaurs have given you everything you have. Your roads, houses, advanced medical devices and treatments, your comfort, cars that keep you safe in many type of crashes, man on the moon, your beloved Internet, your Iphones, Ipads, trains, planes, the stove in your kitchen, and anything else you touch today.

Geronimo,

BTW, you can thank your elders (you know those old dinosaurs) for getting women out of the kitchen. We dinosaurs gave you the washing machines and dyers, then wash and wear clothing. Microwaves, quick dinners, vacuum cleaners, garbage disposals, high efficacy air cleaners (no more dusting,) self-cleaning ovens, daily shower spray, tablets that keep your toilet clean, and oh so much more. So Geronimo, if you are a woman freed from the kitchen, good for you, but least you forget how and who made that possible for you.

BTW, At the EOD, all the women coming into the work force in mass, was drive the cost of everything up more than double. But, if we continue on the path we are now, in 20 years we'll see all the men unemployed and in the kitchen, while the women become the family bread winners. Oh and just to make it clear. I don't care who goes out and works, who stays home, or whatever,so long as your desires don't 1) reach into my pockets, and 2) condemn my life style as excessive because I have things I've worked my ass off for, that you don't.

Heck, I don't care if we elect a woman, who is a lesbian, transvestite, Buddhist, as President, just tell her (him?) to keep the "F" out of my life and that of my family. Do NOT tell me what type of car to drive, what to set my thermostat at, what to eat, and who to see for my healthcare, I am an adult and very capable of standing on my own two feet -- Thank You!.

Global warming deniers: do yourselves a favor and do some research about what is arguably the greatest challenge mankind has ever faced. The bottom line is this: this is an extremely complicated scientific problem so to dismiss (or confirm) it based on any one factor such as the notion that the planet has always gone through climate cycles is ludicrous. There are tens of thousands of very smart, qualified people who have dedicated their lives to the study of climate change. Citing all public surveys of those professionals, the range of those who believe that human activity, specifically the emission of greenhouse gasses, is PARTLY responsible for global warming is 82 - 98%, with the lower end of the range including scientists who are compensated by or otherwise tied to the fossil fuel industry. Ninety eight percent of those who matter most. Side with them or roll the dice? Your choice and good luck explaining your position to your grandchildren if you choose the contrarian view.

A government that wants to take the citizens guns, but arms itself to the teeth? A government that tells us to do with less, then they take separate jets on vacations, because she can’t wait 2 or 3 hours, or helicopters to watch their children play baseball? I don't want to believe it eather, because it's so much easier to sit back and do nothing, but when 98% of the true experts (who have NO commercial bias) agree on something most of us could not even begin to understand, it's very compelling. Edward Campbell and others who use Al Gore as a reason why this can't be true, get over yourselves - you have become a laughingstock. What Al Gore (or any politician) says, does, believes, what he drives or where he lives has NOTHING to do with the science. Now back to your slanted truth. One has to slide down to number 13, passing companies like WalMart, IBM, Wells Fargo, Intel, to bump into the next oil company Conoco Philips (13)

Oh but we are not done yet. Of the top 50 most profitable companies, only the three I listed above appear on that list. Other like Home Depot, Comcast, AT&T, Boeing, and even to good old Brown Truck Company UPS, come in before any of the other hundreds of oil companies!

Now this one may boggle your mind – Guess who is the largest company in the entire world as ranked by Market Cap? Oh no, not those no good oil people, but your friends at Apple Computer!

From DylanRatigan.com:

The facts: America consumes roughly 145 billion gallons of gas a year, so dividing aggregate costs into that number gives us a more accurate per gallon cost. (This doesn’t include additional unknowable costs, like climate change, environmental cleanup after oil spills, and health costs.) Here’s what we can roughly estimate:

Current price of a gallon of gasoline: $3.70

+ Known Off-Balance Sheet Costs:

1. The “Security Premium,” or military spending. ($700bn – 1 Trillion): +$4-6/gal

2. Externalized pollution costs on human mortality ($345 billion according to the Union of Concerned Scientists) : +$2-3/gal

3. Gov’t subsidies, traffic, accidents, free parking ($200-400bn via Center for Technology Assessment), etc: +$1-3/gal

Actual cost of a gallon of gas = $10.70 to $15.70

This isn’t the first time we’ve discussed the need to start finding solutions to America’s addiction to expensive foreign oil, and to start being realistic about what it costs us.

Since the right-wingnuts have been trying to make the tragic incident at Benghazi a Waterloo moment for President Obama and Secretary Clinton, let's get the facts straight as to who is really to blame for the alleged security failure:

House Republicans cut the administration’s request for embassy security funding by $128 million in fiscal 2011 and $331 million in fiscal 2012....Last year, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warned that Republicans’ proposed cuts to her department would be “detrimental to America’s national security” — a charge Republicans rejected.

Ryan, Issa and other House Republicans voted for an amendment in 2009 to cut $1.2 billion from State operations, including funds for 300 more diplomatic security positions. Under Ryan’s budget, non-defense discretionary spending, which includes State Department funding, would be slashed nearly 20 percent in 2014, which would translate to more than $400 million in additional cuts to embassy security.

So you see, while I did find a small leak in your system, which I could fix and recharge you system for $250.00, before the government said no more R-22, ……….ahhhh ….. Well look, I’m really sorry to tell you but again because the government has made the cost of R-22 skyrocket and hard to find, in the long run it will be cheaper for you to rip the old system out (that includes, the outdoor unit, the indoor unit, and the lies between them) and replace it with a R410 system. I can do that for oh…… aay ahhhhh.. $8,995.99!

Edward Campbell, I suggest you read carefully and think before you rant: 1) my comment 'the fossil fuel industry is the most profitable (industry) in history' is correct. I did not name any companies or talk about current market cap. Big Fossil was hugely profitable well before and much longer than many of the other companies you mention. They also have one of the most powerful and best-funded lobbies in Washington...I wonder why that is? How again was I 'slanting the truth?' 2) Your comments re. CFCs and the ozone: a) are you implying that the recorded shrinkage of the ozone hole in the past 20 years has nothing to do with the reduction of CFC use? If you really believe that then it proves once again that you refuse to believe scientific consensus; b) It was actually Pres. Reagan, I presume one of your heroes, that agreed for the U.S. to enact the Montreal Agreement limiting CFCs. Reagan was no environmentalist (perish the thought) but his question was simple: what would be the cost of NOT making this change? One could argue as I do that we are at a very similar crossroads right now with conventional vs. alternative energy, with the effects of global warming no longer looming, but actually upon us. 3) You label me a 'liberal' - whatever that means to you - with the intent of discrediting whatever I say. Newsflash: The country is becoming more liberal, and we are now the majority, a tough pill to swallow for you 'conservatives.'
