Tell Patch: Do You Feel Safe in Teaneck?
Share your thoughts in the comments section below.
Authorities announced last week that an Elm Avenue man found dead after a house fire was murdered. The killing comes nearly seven months after the brutal murder of town gadfly Joan Davis.
Robert Cantor, the Elm Avenue man, was found shortly after midnight last Monday by firefighters battling a three-alarm fire at his house. Investigators said Cantor died from a gunshot wound but have not said if there are any suspects or leads in the case.
The Bergen County Prosecutor's Office, which is handling both murder investigations, has released few details on the crimes. The prosecutor's office has also not said if the two crimes are related. There was no mention of the Davis case in a statement released by the prosecutor last week. No evidence has been made public to suggest any connection between the two murders.
Do you feel safe in Teaneck? Has the recent news of a second murdered township resident caused you to change your life at all? Are you more vigilant? Are you satisfied with the amount of information being made public in the crimes?
Anyone with information on the killings can call the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office Major Case Unit at 201-226-5500 or Teaneck Police at 201-837-2600.

To answer the questions: No, Yes, Yes, No. These two murders have troubled me deeply. I understand that the prosecutors have to protect their investigation. I also understand that we're not on CSI where crimes are neatly solved in an hour. However, Teaneck is a small town, and news of this nature shocks to the core. It's impossible to go on with business as usual. The lack of information is reprehensible. Say something. ANYTHING. If you have no new news, say that because at least I know that you're still working on it! I'm extremely frustrated.

With the recent rash of 2d floor entry burglaries coupled with these two cover-up murders, Teaneck is not as safe as it once was.

I would say no, but then again I've never felt safe in an area I have lived in no matter how nice the area. As long as there are towns and people live in them... murders are going to happen. Here's the bottom line, I own a gun and if someone breaks into my home they are going to be shot dead period I could care less what the "laws" are.

I don't feel safe in Teaneck. These murder's are just the beginning. Last summer there were several homes broken into in my neighborhood, and I wonder what this season will be like. I have the house well protected, and am prepared for intruders. I think as tax payers we should feel safe where we live, and it's important. I also think the town's law enforcement focuses on more areas of the town than others. Our town is turning to crap.

LG: What area of Teaneck do you believe law enforcement patrols? I haven't seen a patrol car in my area since last year.

I am at a loss for words. It's sad about the two residents who have been murdered. What is the police force doing? Are they continuing their investigations? I feel if you don't have a complete report to relay to the town residents, but try and give us some updates to keep the residents aware. We are understanding people and we sometimes no that it takes a while, but don't let these two cases fall off the radar as the saying goes. As for safety issues, I am starting to worry, because I have a child I worry about him dearly and the rest of my family. There is unrest going on everywhere and it appears that Teaneck is starting to feel the brunt of it.

LG: which culture would the police be leaning toward by patrolling Teaneck Road (which runs from Bergenfield to Ridgefield Park)?

LG: I asked because your comment inspired a question. If you're not expecting a question or two every now and then perhaps you should post.

Perhaps the problem with the Teaneck PD is that they believe in "out of sight out of mind". So maybe the citizens of Teaenck should start putting some pressure on them for answers.

One thing worth remembering is that the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office is the lead agency on homicide investigations. Teaneck Police are limited in what they can release because the county prosecutor has the lead. Patch has made several inquiries to the prosecutor's office, but has not yet received any responses or updates.

Good point Noah, perhaps the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office would provide some sort of response if the residents of Teaneck started putting pressure on them to do so?

I don't know. They have received numerous requests for updates from Patch and probably others.

Yes, it’s frustrating and unsettling to know there is a killer out there. But I have news for those of you that don’t know this already. There will always be killers out there. They have wheels too. They travel. They are predators. That’s what they do. A woman, a neighbor of Joan Davis, was quoted in the newspaper saying that the police need to let her know whether she needs to turn her alarm on at night. I’m not a police officer, but as an informed citizen I can tell her, yes, you do. If you have an alarm system, you should be using it. Always. Please don’t rely on the police to give you the heads up.

Teesmyth. No problem.
The BCPO know what they are doing. Their job isn't easy. They have to deal with the most lowest forms of life on the planet on a daily basis: politicians. Well, self-serving politicians. If you know of any other kind, give them a hug and a vote. Instead of projecting our fear and anger on to the police, why not use that energy to help them find this/these killer(s). If you have any information that may help them, contact them. Let them know. Keep an eye out on your neighbors, especially the elderly. Remind them to lock their doors, turn on their alarms, be wary of unexpected visitors at their doors. Educate them on scam artists and their ruses. Some of the most dangerous criminals don’t look like criminals. Be cautious. Be safe.

As a fairly new resident of Teaneck (a year and a half), I have to say that I feel uneasy living here. A few months ago, I accompanied my friend to a doctor's appointment in the early afternoon and when we returned, the front and back windshields of my car, which was parked on the street, were both smashed. It wasn't a matter of someone trying to get to anything in the car (there wasn't anything in there) since access from those windows is limited. It was labeled as "malicious mischief" and I now park in my driveway (not that that's a safe haven). In the town I previously lived for my entire life, never did I worry about parking on the street.
So, yes, adding that incident to the murders, I do feel uneasy. While I like being able to read the Police Blotter in the Suburbanite to know what's going on, I admit that it does add to my fear.

Welp, I imagine that the prosecutor has his hands quite full these days. What, with being sued by policemen in Hackensack and all. *sigh*
Sorry to hear about your car, Newbie13.
