The town’s need for more public gathering space has been raised as a reason for several proposed projects in Teaneck. There have been calls to use the Teaneck Road Verizon Building as a cultural arts center and the Council recently voted to support the Teaneck Community Charter School’s exploratory efforts to bond for a new gym, which would serve as a shared public space. Initial plans for renovations to the municipal complex also call for adding public meeting space.
Does the town have a shortage of public gathering spaces? Does Teaneck need more space for public meetings and cultural events? What do you think of the town's current public spaces?

YES, Teaneck does more (and better) public space facilities. Rodda Center is usually packed and people are turned away. Town hall is in disrepair and better suited for a 1950s Teaneck. I don't think i think agree with every project here but still overall we need more spaces for all the different groups and residents. Not to mention these spaces would attract shops and help improve the commercial areas. More people gathering, more shoppers.

The Township of Teaneck has more than adequate available public and taxpayer funded space. The Rodda Center, our numerous public schools, the Teaneck Public Library, our municipal building, the Puffin Building/Creek Conservatory property, FDU, many civic and fraternal organizational buildings, our numerous parks (outdoor events) and local houses of worship can and do accomodate our cultural, artistic, political and civic events and programs. To utilize additional taxpayer dollars and/or to bond, coupled with the potential reduction in rateable tax revenue generating properties is not the route to take during current complicated and precarious economic conditions.

I went to the Puffin center a week ago on a Sunday. It was locked and empty. It make no sense to waste funds and resources building more public spaces when the existing public buildings are left locked and empty for large chunks of time.

Joseph: did you go to the right Puffin? The place is always busy with various events and performances. many of which are covered right here on the PATCH. One such exmaple was sunday's latino heritage festival. Maybe check the web before making your way over next time to ensure you aren't going when it's closed.

I agree with Paul that Teaneck should use existing buildings and should not consider spending a single penny. Why can't we have dual purpose buildings.... why can't we use schools buildings......

Teaneck doesn't need the cost burden of purchasing, rehabbing and maintaining additional space for public gatherings. In addition to the Rodda Center and the Library, the town has a plethora of gathering spaces including the many school facilities and other spaces that can be made available by non-profit institutions. It would be fiscally irresponsible to take a potential revenue source off the tax rolls to serve a redundant function.

I am thinking of leaving Teaneck for just this reason. My taxes went from $5300 in 1999 to $almost $1100 this year.... This is insane....... anyone who wants more services... bigger meeting places and nicer facilities should feel free to donate money or get some company/bank to donate money...... I am sick of paying tax increases
