Town-wide Garage Sale Planned in Teaneck
Township collecting registrations for daylong event.
Residents can now register to take part in Teaneck’s first township-wide garage sale, scheduled in August.
There won’t be one set location for the sale. Instead, residents will be able to sell items at their homes, the township said in a news release. A list of sale locations will be published on the town’s website.
“Signs advertising a garage sale will be permitted to be placed in the public right of way but must be removed immediately after the conclusion of the respective garage sale,” the release said. “Furthermore, posted signs may not obstruct the view of motorists.”
Residents can register online at www.teanecknj.gov/residents. The town-wide event is planned for Aug. 12, with a rain date of Aug. 19. It will run from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Other North Jersey communities, including Maywood and Nutley, have held similar events.
For more information on Teaneck’s sale, contact Executive Assistant Issa Abassi at 201-837-1600 ext. 1003 or iabbasi@teanecknj.gov.

A nice idea, but wouldn't it make more sense if everyone did it at one central location. Why drive around to a dozen different houses when you can just go to one place?

Does "TOWN WIDE" mean anything to you? It seems to be self-explanatory to me.

Driving around for customers is much better than people lugging their stuff (that might or might not sell) to a central place.

Shimon-
The reason is if its at one location, people won't take the crap they are elling back home. The DPW will have to clean it up and the tax payers will once again get it in the rear from the township.

Great idea. Bogota has had town wide garage sales on a different day. Why not Saturday and Sunday or a week day? Sunday is a Christian Sabboth day. Aren't we suppose to be an inclusive community?

There is nothing wrong with having it on a Sunday. If you have it on a Saturday in a town that is more Jewish than Catholic then you wouldn't make anything on the "garage" sale. I do agree that it should be done on a Saturday & a Sunday this way you get it on both days.

Since when do religious churchgoing Christians (which is a minority of Christians in our community) avoid stopping at yard sales on the way home from church? Is there a Christian law I never heard of that says you can't hold or purchase anything from a yard sale? Unlike religious Jews, I'm pretty sure most religious Christians will be quite happy to check out a few yard sales before or after church on their sabbath. Because our religions don't have the same interpretation of what a sabbath is, and that's okay.

I think this town-wide garage sale idea is terrific. Can't wait to participate. I hope they don't expect people to hold 12-hour-long yard sales, though! I can hardly make it from 9-3 without getting exhausted ;-P

Bizzy Bee, it seems that you misunderstood the ratiionale. Our comment has to do with the time it takes to effectively hold a garage sale on a specific day. Having it on Sunday would limit the time most Christians would have to prepare. By the way, there are more Christians than you think in Teaneck. Some would not even participant on Sunday. Many stores are closed on Sunday because of the Blue Law.

Trylon Man-there are more businesses that are for the blue law than you think. If they were such a huge demand for the blue law to be taken away then it would have won in the elections. Everytime it goes for a election to be overturned it loses...most people in Bergen County want the blue law.
