A section of Route 4 westbound was closed during Thursday's rush hour after a sport utility vehicle flipped on its side on the highway, near Teaneck Road.
The Teaneck Volunteer Ambulance Corps brought one person to Holy Name Medical Center. There were no life-threatening injuries reported.
Delays were heavy through Englewood before the highway was reopened around 7 p.m.

Noah: Thanks to the Patch, I am now very concerned about the safety of Rt. 4 East and West bound. Which one has more accidents? Is the Town following the problem or has the state started to investigate as this is a state road?

The county/state has wanted to widen RT 4 in Teaneck for many years, but I recall reading in the suburbanite there was opposition because it would encroach on the so-called green-belt.

It is a nightmare to try to get to Teaneck road from Paramus on Rt. 4 most of the time due to lane closure. Teaneck should get on with times and allow the widening of the Rt. 4 to make it easy for all and save the environment of the town from all the exhaust of the slow crawling traffic.
I am sure a few feet would not make much of a difference to the so called green-belt when compared to the reduction in pollutants in the area. Area residents should be the ones on the forefront of this project.
I have little hope of this ever coming to fruition however due to some very vocal people who resist all development without looking at the merits.

Making things easier for residents? Surely you jest.

Zizi: There is a permanent squeeze (from 3 lanes to 2) on Rt. 4 eastbound because of the bridge over the highway at Sussex/Garrison. Though built in 1931, it is still in good shape and it is not in the NJDOT schedule for replacement. Best bet is to get off at River Rd.

Rt 4 between Englewood & River Rd is very Green and country-like. But ... this stretch of road has a deadly record for accidents & casualties. This has become a crisis issue, and requires IMMEDIATE resolution. If we don't want to cut down trees, we much have more visible police presence and speed reduction. We can't have the cake and eat it.

Milton: We don't know until accident figures are released by the state or the townships how serious a problem this is. Teaneck used to keep such records and I suspect they still do. Releasing them would build a case for appropriate action. For instance, do accidents our at night in sections of the road that are not lit? Are their drainage problems? Merging problems? Line of sight problems? I do know the exit signs are old, small and sometimes partially blocked by foliage. Maybe that is a good place to start.
