After leading a mural walking tour through Spanish Harlem earlier this month, artist George Zavala is now set to unveil the latest exhibit at the Puffin Cultural Forum.
Curated by Zavala, “The Writings on the Wall: Labor in the U.S.” will include the works of artists Virginia Ayress and Mike Alewitz and will focus on the history of labor, unions and workers’ rights. The opening reception begins at 5 p.m. Sunday at the Puffin.
“One of my ideas for these two artists (Ayress and Alewitz) to talk about on the opening night and to try to show through their work is that I don’t think you can separate the immigrant experience from the worker experience, especially in the United States,” Zavala said.
Additional speakers at the reception will include Hetty Rosenstein, New Jersey director for the Communications Workers of America (CWA) and CWA's District 1 organizing director; Esther Cohen, an activist, writer, teacher and curator; and Joshua Freeman, author and professor of history at Queens College and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York.
Freeman said he plans to talk about the early history of the labor movement in the U.S., “especially the Knights of Labor, the most important labor group of the 19th century.”
“This early period of labor activism is little known today but at the time presented an important critique of the path of economic and political development that was taking place in the United States while fighting to improve the everyday conditions of working people,” he said. “I hope people will come [to the reception] to look at the wonderful art but also to join in a conversation about the role of ordinary people in shaping our country. At a time when we face so many problems and choices, looking back can inform and provoke our thinking about the future.”
The opening reception for “The Writings on the Wall: Labor in the U.S." begins at 5 p.m. Sunday. The event is free, and the exhibit will run through Jan. 5.
