Weekend Guide: Two Nights of Jaimoe’s 'Jasssz' Band at Mexicali

Also, Joanna Schubert at Classic Quiche and Saturday Storytime at the library

Spirited drummer and Allman Brothers Band founder Jaimoe and his Jasssz Band will bring their American soul music to Mexicali Live tonight and Saturday night.

Along with Jaimoe, the Jasssz Band includes Junior Mack on guitar and vocals; Dave Stoltz on bass; Mathais Schuber on keyboards; Paul Lieberman on sax, flute and piccolo; Kris Jensen on sax; and Teaneck resident Reggie Pittman on trumpet.

Because of a previous engagement, Pittman said he won’t be able to make it out to the weekend performances.

“They play all over the country, but the one time they’re five minutes from my house, I can’t make it,” he said.

Pittman said he joined the ensemble about three years ago after playing at a club he and the band performed at.

“I went to perform, and after I was done, Jaimoe came up to me and asked if I’d like to join the band,” Pittman said. “When I went home and looked the band up, I saw that they were a big deal!”

“Reggie is a great musician, and we're happy to have him,” said Jaimoe, who added that concert-goers will hear a variety of tunes whether they attend one or both performances.

Mack said he hopes that a wide range of patrons can make it out to hear the show.

“We play a variety of music genres – a little rock, jazz, rhythm and blues,” he said. “Don’t let our name scare you away.”

Jaimoe’s Jasssz Band will perform at 10 p.m. tonight and at 8 p.m. Saturday night.
