What Do You Think of Gov. Christie's "None of Your Business" Comment?

CBS2 News was in Teaneck asking voters about Christie's comment.

CBS New York reporter Marcia Kramer came to Teaneck recently to gauge reactions to Gov. Chris Christie's comment that where he sends his children for school is "none of your business."

“You don’t send your children to public schools. You send them to private schools, so I was wondering why you think it’s fair to be cutting funding to public schools?” a woman named Gail asked the governor on Steve Adubato's "On The Line" show.

Christie apparently didn't feel voters should be concerned about his personal schooling choices.

"I don’t ask you where you send your kids to school. Don’t bother me where I send mine,” the governor added, as reported by CBS.

After the initial blunt response, Christie did continue to explain that although he doesn't use his local public schools, he still pays school taxes and wanted his kids to have a religious education. He also noted that as governor he is responsible for the entire state.

Questions about where public officials send their kids for school are not new. Obama Administration Education Secretary Arne Duncan was asked about what school his daughter would attend and told the Washington Post she would go to public school in Arlington, Va.

Not surprisingly, Christie's quote quickly hit cable news and political blogs.  Chatter about Christie's comment spanned from MSNBC to RushLimbaugh.com.

Based on CBS New York's report, people interviewed in Teaneck were not amused by governor's blunt style.

"Kramer took the video clip of the exchange to Teaneck where voters watched, listened and were appalled at the language coming out of the governor’s mouth," CBSNewYork.com reported.

Didn't get a chance to sound off to CBS? Patch wants to know what readers think of Christie's response.

Whereas the Governor has the right to send his children to private school, the tone of his response was disrespectful to the woman who posed the question. Inherent in her question was the notion that the policies enacted by Mr. Christie in his capacity as governor were interfering with the rights of parents without his means to ensure that their own children receive a quality education. I was appalled by the reaction his remarks received on the Morning Joe program on MSNBC. The pundits sat around and laughed at (perhaps even cheered) his remarks and never addressed the concerns implied by the woman's question. Ironically, this same "news" program had previously aired a one week special on educational reform just a few weeks ago. They never made the connection between dramatic cutbacks in public support of education and our own economic recovery and sustainability. Prof Sacks had just finished comparing our crumbling infrastructure and inability to compete with China. How can we expect to achieve what China is doing so rapidly without investing in a sound education for ALL the children of New Jersey and the nation? That is the question. The Governor's remarks were rude and certainly not those of a statesman. I think the woman is deserving of an apology, especially if she is a citizen and tax payer of NJ.

Once again, Christie is showing his bullish side. He missed the question. She did not question him about why he sent his children, but why he thought it was fair to cut funding to public schools. Christie is a bully who uses his position to do whatever he wants. I hate to yell Chris Christie, but it does not work this way. You need to treat the citizens of New Jersey with respect. You become loud and obnoxious when someone questions your decisions that you clearly know are wrong. Let us not forgot the major snowstorm this season while he was on vacation. He could not even bother to take a break from his vacation to make a statement by way of radio or television, which many, if not all governors would of done. When he came back from vacation, he did not apologize for his actions from what I know he never does. Nor did he apologize for allowing the Lieutenant Governor to take vacation at the same time.

He is neither a statesman or a gentleman...catholic education for you children? What part of catholicism are you leaving out? Treating people nicely? Thats how you teach your children to act/react? By degrading people? Yelling at people? Calling people names? GREAT ROLE MODEL!!! Lose some weight and your attitude...How about taking all that anger and energy to the gym big guy? Where do you get off talking to anyone like that? Who are you? Oh that's right an ELECTED official who works for us the taxpayers!! Apology, good luck...his highness has spoken, do as I say! What happened to collective bargaining ? What about the letter you wrote at the start of your campaign stating "I will not touch the workers pensions" you are a liar...and a special interest punk...well you did it Gov, you have divided the state, put hard working people against each other...all the while watching out for you political friends...millionaires (politicians)

Listen to how this woman asks her question. If she would just focus on the one issue of the funding cuts for education and not address the fact the the governor chooses to she his kids to private school which is his right, then he would have treater her with more respect. I think what has gotten under Christie's skin is the entitlement attitudes of people he faces every day. I'll say one thing, There's no question on where he stands on an issue. Sometimes the truth hurts.

It is just another answer designed to deflect anyone from making him answer difficult answers because he cannot think on his feet. He acts as though he is a corporate CEO, and not a good one at that, but not the leader of a state government. Simple minds will gravitate to this type of rhetoric. I have faith in the NJ electorate that it is made up of thoughtful and more sophisticated individuals who want government to work for us, not for the career building of a politician. I just hope the other party has the courage to stand up to him and can run an opponent in the next governor's election that can fight this guy.

The governor is responsible for upholding the NJ Constitution that guarentees each citizen in NJ the right to a thorough and efficient education. Yet Mr. Christie abuses his office as he disrespectfully undermines all of our public schools. Why he believes he should be able to get away with that is the public's business.

This is a perfect display of his bully govenoring. Who cares where his kids go to school...who cares that he pays 38 thousand dollars in property taxes...maybe he shouldn't live above his means...maybe he shouldn't love in NJ...

defensive when it comes to his kids

The question was about public schools and his funding. Yet he chose his "bully" tactics to respond. This guy isn't Governor material much less Presidential material. Does he think those tactics will work out in the real world?

His entire career has been nothing more then self promotion.."Me, Me, Me. I did it all". Every legal action for the most part focused on the opposition party. No crooked Republicans I guess. Yet when he was taken to task on it, he did the usual bully act and walked out of the hearings. His brother is found to be committing criminal acts...that just disappeared. Christie will cover for the Wall Street crooks. Take care of you billionaire buddy but funneling health care to his hospitals. Time after time he proves he's nothing more than a goon for the rich and powerful. Just he wants to be just like them.

"Former U.S. attorney Christopher Christie, who is running for governor as a Republican in New Jersey, defended handing a multi-million-dollar, no bid contract to an ex-federal prosecutor who declined to criminally prosecute Christie's brother on stock fraud charges two years earlier."

Or the BS Town Hall meetings that are held when no one can attend?
blatant blatent personal use of state property to go to a ball game "he didn't want to miss"? spitting in the face of anyone hit by his "cost cutting" measures"

The millions given to a large corporation to move five miles?

The lost grants?

The millions in fees owed to the Federal government for broekn contracts?

The Healthcare limitation to in-state only benifiting his big business buddy Norcross?

Two hundred million to a failed mall that no one really wanted?

It's about time the Republicans promoted a few guys that know how to act like Democrats, who've crammed their various agendas down our throats for so many years, I was wondering if the GOP would ever get the hang of how to do it.

Put that boot on their throats, Gov, because they never hesitated to do that to us.

@ Kate Jones: First, the article does not address President Obama, but someone in his Administration. Next, I would like to see where President Obama ever said that he was definitely sending his daughters to public school. I recall him saying that public schools were under consideration. I'm sure that he and his wife did exactly what Governor Christie and his wife did: made the decision that was in the best interest of their children.

Sending the children of a President of the United states logistically is almost impossible. The disruption of a private school setting with the required security makes it impossible. Like it or not, it's not a realistic option. For a state Governor, it isn't the same. Nor do I care but the question was valid and he handled it in his usual bully manner.

Governor Christie is showing his real colors as a narcissist bully. Watc,h the body langauge and style of response. He is using the classic techniques of this type of personality: scapegoating, giving the appearance of superiority, a dogmatic style, inability to accept criticism or challenge, grandiosity, dictatorial attitude and style. Although many of his arguments may make sense his true intention is most probably self aggrandizement. He can send his children to any school he wishes, but if you look at his initial response, it showed an arrogant reaction to any from of question or criticsm. When one becomes a public figure very little is private. The people of his state are paying his salary which gives them the right to ask reasonable questions. Many of them have no choice as to where they send their children. His lack of empathy is another sign of the narcissist bully.

Lynn and Sue:

We as citizens can not and should not expect to be treated with respect by anyone (even our elected officials) when we choose to treat them with disrespect. The fact that he has no children in the public school system is absolutely irrelevant, no matter how she asked the question. Gail phrased the question in a manner as to be a passive "shot" at the Governor and he handled it like someone who doesn't take S--T from anyone. Too bad there are not more like him. Oh, and cutting the amount of money you send to "public education" really isn't cutting education. It's cutting the amount of money the teacher's unions can squeeze out of the taxpayers, since up to 80% of school budgets go to salaries, benefits and pensions and not into the classrooms for the children. And please take note that I said "Teacher's Unions" NOT Teachers.

Two things: I think people responded so approvingly of Christie's tone, not because he was correct in what he said or the way he said it, but because everyone is so tired of how politicians evade questions and immediately fall back on their script. He was rude, arrogant and WRONG. Second: as the head of the state, it is a poor reflection on what you really think of your schools if you don't send your kids to a public school. It would be like the president of Godfather's Pizza being seen eating at Domino's. What's wrong with your pizza, Mr. Godfather? If Christie wants his kids to have a religious education, he can supplement his kids' public school education by sending them to catechism after school as many parents do. When yo go to Catholic school hiow many classes in religion do you take on any given day anyway? He completely overlooks the fact that ina Catholic school his kids probably have small classes, good supplies, the latest text books, etc -- all the things he won't ensure the public schools get.

The point of the woman's question was that if he's sending his kids to private schools, why is he cutting funding for public schools?

If he can afford to send them to private schools, it is thanks to his paycheck from NJ tax payers.

The person who asked the question was very polite. His ill-mannered, disrespectful reply sounds like he is unable to teach manners at home, but that isn't the fault of the public.

It's quite hypocritical that HE doesn't want her to judge how HIS kids are being educated yet HE wants to decide how HER kids are educated... HER taxes help are pay for HIS kids' education. His attitude needs an adjustment.

And if he seeks judgement, instead of tax payers funding the big bucks to haul his big ole butt to see a bit of his son's baseball game, why didn't he just walk? He's a politician. He'll get free medical care when his 300 pound body has a heart attack. Will the polite person who questioned him?

Also, people, quit throwing slams at each other. It doesn't help solve the problem and we aren't on 'teams'. Focus on the problems in the political arena. Too many Congress members are forgetting who funds them...you and me. They get life time pensions and medical care and then turn on our children and our elderly. Quit with the throwing stones and look at the real problem to find solutions.

Don't be fooled. Encouraging you to fight amongst yourselves diverts your attention to from they are doing. Think about it and get tough for us (U. S.) .

This is typical Gov. Christie arrogance. Does anyone remember when he stated, "teachers use their students as drug mules"? Or how about when he blamed the Obama administration for NJ losing out on 400 million in federal aid to schools, then refused to apologize when it was discovered Christie was wrong?

This moron has pitted the people of NJ against each other. He blames public employees for the financial hardship of the state. Meanwhile, he funds the Revel casino in AC to the tune of $264,000,000. And as if that’s not enough, he wants to redo Zanadu because he feels it's too ugly.

Then there’s the screw-up of the ARC tunnel. The Feds offered to give half of the money back to NJ for highway funding if NJ paid what it rightfully owed. But Gov. Arrogance decided it was all or nothing. SMOOTH MOVE IDIOT! Now we owe the full amount.

But perhaps the most mind-boggling move by Gov. idiot was when he decided that if you didn't use your gift card within 2 yrs, the state would confiscate the value. Well FAT SLOB, I have a sweater in my closet I haven't worn for 5yrs come get it! Or would you prefer some cheesecake and an industrial size bag of Doritos?

You call him things like fat ass and make fun of fat people then imply that my particular feeling toward new jersey teachers has something to with my personal short comings, all while ignoring the substance of anything I said the fact of the matter is that if you went through new jersey school system you would understand that if you could have gone to a private school there you would have. All these character assassinations on common sense decisions is just evidence that you are intellectually incapable of accepting the mans argument; not a sign that you defeated it. Stop pretending you know anything about him or anyone else. Maybe he should just let NJ public schools fend for themselves? Cause frankly NJ schools are moderate at best. NJ teachers who are frustrated with Christie understand that he's not simply trying to screw them over and those that don't are able to present no evidence that he does and resort to picking on his weight. Much in the same way it seems you are a rather insecure individual who will spend your next reply cleverly hinting at how big your penis is or how you were the kid doing the picking.

I think he is completely justified in responding the way he did. The subtext of the question was not whether or not he felt it was right to cut school funding which is a loaded question because either he felt it was right or he was just doing it to fuck with democrats. The heart of that question is that she is asking him whether or not he feels ashamed for being "hypocritical." The reality is that New Jersey public school teacher, (and believe me I know a lot of them) would probably not give his children a fair education anyway considering his stance on education and the thuggish unions that oppose his efforts. The fact is that nobody has an argument that makes as much sense as what he did, and people are at an intellectual loss and looking to overcome it with name calling and loaded bullshit questions like the caller.

Try asking him a question like a human being, he never struck me as an unreasonable person, but I've never seen a video where he was asked a question in a reasonable tone, ever. And if you think that woman on the phone was asking him a cool and level headed earnest and fair question, then you are not thinking at all, because you would all react the same way if someone called your parenting into question.
