I have been pleading with the Teaneck town management to fix the pedestrian cross walk for years at this corner. They keep refusing despite several accidents. How many people have to be hurt or even die before they listen. The light changes very quickly so you have to cross using the traffic light instead of the pedestrian light. It is difficult and dangerous for everyone that crosses this intersection. I hope that this woman is o.k. my heart goes out to her family. Nicole Idler

Perhaps needs attention from DOT. However, drivers need to take more responsiblity in their driving.

Totally can relate to the lady. I was hit by a car at the intersection of Cedar Lane & River Road in February 2011. Since then, the fear has stuck to me. It is very hard to get rid of anxiety. This evening, just about 1 hour ago, while I was crossing the intersection of Cedar Lane & Larch Ave, a car was speeding up to make a left turn and trying to passing in front of me. How could the driver do this!! I swear to God that I saw the walk light lighting up then I walked!! What was the diver thinking?! Trying to take a chance? Can't you just wait for a second?! Just one damn second!! Please!! I still want to happily live my life, okay?! Please!!! If the same damn thing happened to your family, how would you feel? Think twice before you "take action" for God's sake!!I :(

This is a dangerous intersection! With a Temple, Dunkin Donuts ,Bank Parking lot and the post office near by ... there is a lot of foot traffic! There are so many issues with Cedar Lane.... American Legion is dangerous also .
1. NO turn on red....AT ALL LANE CROSSINGS
2. All stop for pedestrian AT ALL LANE CROSSINGS
3. Turn Left only signal.
I think the towns people would love to see changes at all Cedar Lane Crossing
THE SPEED LIMIT ON THE LANE IS 25MPH 25...25... NOT 35\40 MPH

All the crosswalks in Teaneck are dangerous. The state law signs that remind drivers to stop for pedestrians are ignored. Without the strong arm of the law enforcing this law the people are targets for the drivers speeding, texting or drinking coffee while driving. I have been almost hit crossing the street, especially on Cedar Lane; I have also witnessed others nearly hit because the unpublished speed limit is any speed a driver wants to go with the constant ignoring of the law. What we need are speed bumps and basic law enforcement with stiff penalties.

Cedar Lane is a County road but records of accident locations in Teaneck are kept by the Teaneck PD. It seems time the Council and public should see the Accident Map to see where resources should be used to reduce our accident rate (about 4/day), what intersections to avoid, etc. Knowledge is power and our Manager claims he runs a "transparent" administration. This is a chance to show it.

Speed bumps are a GREAT idea! Or that pavement that makes noise!

Speed bumps in crosswalks? They are getting rid of speed bumps because they cause damage to cars...police cars can not "chase" & ambulances can not go over a certain speed limit if there are speed bumps on the road. Also when it snows & they have to pave the streets they do damage to the plows. That's why they have them in parking lots. But like I said they are getting rid of the in parking lots because of the damage to low cars & snow plows.

Turn signal needed from all directions!!!!!
Pedestrians need to stop crossing unless sign says to CROSS!

@Tracey Mara, drivers need to STOP or Stay-Stopped when a pedestrian(s) is in the cross-walk.

The law says that drivers must stop for pedestrians in crosswalks. This gives many pedestrians license to jaywalk. Tickets should be issued to jaywalkers.

Walking is a necessity and driving is a responsiblity. Would like to see reckless drivers learn that.

This is not the first time such an incident happened on Cedar Lane. I saw an older fellow get hit by a van on Cedar Lane a couple of years ago. He was in front of me on line to pay to at Butterflake Bakery, and as I exited the store, I saw him get hit.
It goes without saying, all drivers must be very careful and obey all driving regulations. However, with the volume of pedestrians on Cedar Lane [and some other business districts in town], ALL traffic lights at Cedar Lane should have:
1. Talking crossing instructions
2. 4 way crossing periods
3. Left turn signals for all left turns
4. No turn on red.
May it take an extra minute or two for drivers to get around these major business districts - absolutely, but how many times must this happen before real measures are taken.

Jason, well put. Furthermore, this article is NOT about jaywalkers (in a previous comment), it's about an elderly woman crossing at the crosswalk who was hit by a driver. Other than the brakes gone bad, there is no excuse for reckless driving.

My prayers for that poor woman who was hit by the car. Glad to hear that the driver stayed behind & didn't try to run, at least they took accountability for what they did. They have done the "talking" crossing on Cedar Lane & no one listens to it. That corner is a very dangerous corner & like someone else says the crossing light turns too fast. Even for kids crossing the street they are not even halfway across & it changes. I know it will make more traffic on Cedar Lane but maybe they should give the pedestrian a set amount of time to cross the streets before the light changes to green like they have with the arrows for those that are turning. I live a block away from Cedar Lane right by J & J pharmacy & that's not a great intersection either. I walk with a cane & sometimes I am not halfway before the light changes & as I'm walking there's a bumper right behind my ass as I'm walking & I'm 46 not 88. They have to do something it's not just Cedar Lane either. And you can't blame people that are walking because look at all the accidents on RTE 4. Drivers have to slow down, stop when they are supposed to & let the people get across the street before they turn or move into the crosswalk. Most of the time it's because they are not paying attention they are either on the dam cell phone or just watching the light so they can go as soon as it turns green.

I was recently visiting Teaneck from overseas. On my first day there, I waited very patiently at the intersection of Selvage Rd and Teaneck Rd in order to cross the street, Finally when I got the green cross signal (not just green light but the signal to cross) i entered the intersection and was nearly run over by a car who clearly ran the red light (not yellow- red!) She had the audacity to honk me as if I was doing something wrong. All this went on right in front of a cop, who had his back turned because he was watchnig utility work being done on the cross Street (Arlington Ave?
I was left with the thought that these things never would have happened in the Teaneck I grew up in forty plus years ago

Palisade Avenue at Teaneck Road does not have a left turn lane like Queen Anne Road has. Having this lane would cut down on accidents. Now you have people trying to make left turns by beating oncoming traffic as soon as the light turns green. Many times I wait for a green light and then drive straight only to have to brake short when some maniac going in the other direction tries to make a left turn in front of oncoming traffic, hoping he or she can make the turn at the moment the light turns green instead of waiting for oncoming traffic to pass. Those trying to turn left from Palisade onto Cedar Lane sometimes have to wait for 3 or 4 light changes before they can turn simply because the light turns red before even one car has a chance to turn. This intersection would be safer with a left turn lane and left turn arrow.

One more thing, has anybody ever tried to cross Cedar Lane at a marked crosswalk, like the one in front of the movie theater? Have cars EVER stopped for you as they are required to do by law? Enforcement is lax at best.

I hope someone on Council or on the Manager's staff moniters these comments. "Knowledge is Power" and our Manager has declared his administration is "transparent". I want all who read this to know that the Teaneck PD maintains an actual or computer pin map that locates the site of every accident in Teaneck every year. That is about 1500 - 1700 accidents each year, about 4 per day. The majority take place at local intersections. We are now learning that the streetscape design discourages local residents from shopping here. That is a very bad sign. We invested $4 million that improved little but created new problems instead: more dead trees; light pollution; rotten sidewalk and lamp pole bases; and those traffic blocking bus "bumpouts". Seems with all these "improvements", there was no money left for new signs to direct first timers to off street parking.
The Township should call in the County engineer to see what new insights can be utilized on County Roads in Teaneck where a good deal of our accidents take place. This accident could be a design issue or a personal issue. The records will indicate if the problem is the intersection. As far as the crosswalks are concerned, I look at the oncoming driver and put my arm out as if playing football. It has worked so far.

Didn't there used to be a stairway down to Railroad Ave so that pedestrians could cross UNDER Cedar Lane near Palisade?

Take it slow turning at intersections and be prepared to stop if necessary. Get off your cell phones, no texting, put make-up on at home or at work (sure your boss won't mind), no beverages while turning and wake up when you're behind the wheel.

A year and half ago on Nov. 17, 2011 my son was struck by a vehicle while standing on the corner of Queen Ann Rd. and Cedar Lane. The light turned green for the traffic on Queen Ann Rd.and my son was waiting for the traffic to clear before he crossed Cedar Lane. The vehicle ran him over while making a right hand turn as he was STILL on the corner! My son who was nearly killed, was in the hospital for over 3 weeks with a shattered pelvis, broken femur, fractured spine and lacerated bladder. Yet the Teaneck police TO THIS DAY have yet to submit a report to the Bergen County Prosecutor's office, as they are required to do whenever there is a serious or near fatal accident. The intersection was not closed down after the accident for investigation and the driver was let go and only charged with careless driving . He wasn't even tested for intoxication! Cedar Lane is a death trap as it is but it doesn't help when the police are negligent in their duties. Avoid Cedar Lane if at all possible!
