Weekly column featuring pets in need of a home from shelters across Bergen County.

Shy at first, Oogly eventually comes out of his shell the more he spends time with his handler. Once he trusts you, he is all over you. Like your shadow, he is more than happy to give you kisses and receive affection. Walks and hand feeding are great tools to help build a stronger relationship between Oogly and his handler. Although he may take some time to warm up, he will show his true colors in no time. Adopters will have to be patient and allow him to adjust on his own terms. At 5 years old, he still has a lot of energy and love to give. ID#87835

Jellybean, a domestic short hair, is a nice girl. She is about 1 year old and loves to be held and is very happy when she is in a loving set or arms. Jellybean will be spayed before leaving the shelter.

Licorice is a large, female, domestic short hair cat, about 13 years old who seeks a home where she can live out the rest of her life. Calm and loving, Licorice has a beautiful coat which she keeps extra silky soft. She is front declawed and has tested negative for Feline Aids and Feline Leukemia.

Cleo is a medium size, adult calico cat, who has been at the shelter three months and really needs a home. She came to the shelter with four other cats when her owner sadly had to go into a nursing home. She is pretty scared at the shelter and tends to hide but she is doing fine with the other cats in the cat display where she lives. Now because she hides she is a bit hard to see but will warm up to you quickly when you start to pet her as she seems to really enjoy human interaction. She is about 4 years old, is up to date with shots, has tested negative for Feline Aids & Feline Leukemia and will be microchipped before leaving our shelter.

Honey, a female Shar Pei, came to the shelter with another dog when their owner lost their home. She's very sweet, a calm, laid-back 5 year old who enjoys attention and wants to meet everyone. Because she has lived outdoors, she'll need some work on house training and obedience lessons, but we're sure she'll have fun learning with her new family. Veterinary treatment for her eyes has begun, but her adopter will need to follow up with their own vet. Honey is waiting for that special family that will let her live indoors with them and give her the attention she craves.

Heath is a one-year old friendly and very outgoing cat. He does not seem to mind the other shelter cats. Heath is very active and playful. He does not mind being held, but he is scared of going into a carrier.

Dumpling is a small female Chihuahua about 10 years old. The shelter has fallen in love with this petite lovebug. She is always ecstatic to meet people and is the farthest thing from shy. She was found as a stray and brought to the facility. The shelter can not understand how no one is looking for her. Even though she is a golden oldie she still has a bunch of life and vigor left in her tiny body. With any older pooch, the shelter recommends vet checkups just to make sure she is in tip top shape.

Bumper and His Friends Will Make Great Companions

Minnie is a medium size, female domestic short hair gray cat who came to the shelter with another cat when her owner sadly, decided she no longer wanted them any longer. Minnie is a little shy at first but does warm up when she is given one on one attention and then loves to be pet and held. This sweet, petite girl has a beautiful face and gorgeous markings. She is about 4 years old, up to date with shots and has tested negative for Feline Aids and Feline Leukemia. She will get a microchip before leaving our shelter.

Alfalfa is a medium size, adult, male lop eared rabbit available for adoption. He came into the shelter as a stray. Rabbits can make great pets the shelter says recommending the use of rabbits.org as a source for medical, behavioral and general information about raising rabbits.

Dodoro is a medium size, adult, male cat who has also been known to be called “Mr. Goodlooking.” Not a lap cat, he prefers to take the world on his own terms, the shelter says. This 7-year old is front-declawed and would love a home for the new year.

Q-Bert, a to 6 to 8-year-old cat, came in to the shelter as a stray. He’s quite distinctive with his one ear folded down. Sweet and gentle Q-Bert is affectionate with humans and gets along with other cats. He has tested negative for feline leukemia and FIV.

Alli Cat is a handsome male white with orange domestic short hair cat that is about two years old. His owners told the shelter he has lived with children and he is good with other cats. Alli prefers an open litter box. He doesn't like the hooded variety. When you approach Alli Cat's cage in the lobby, he rubs against the cage and wants you to pet him.

Lovebug is a five-year old domestic short hair, gray and white adult cat. Another victim of the economy, Lovebug came to shelter when her owners lost their home to foreclosure. She has lived with children, dogs and other cats and is now seeking her forever home. Her name says it all.

Chica, a 3.5 year old, is a female cattle dog mix. She is a favorite among staff members but unfortunately, she has been here for over three months which is too long to live in a kennel. Chica came to the shelter because her owner could not take her along with his move. Not only is her personality irresistible, but her one snaggle tooth makes her even more lovable. Because she is so calm, first time dog owners should be ok. Little kids may intimidate her a bit, but we are willing to try a meet and greet and see how it goes.

Jewel is a medium size, female dalmation mix. About five years old and weighing well over 50 pounds, this girl sure does have a great personality. She is at the shelter because her owner could no longer take care of her, but she is still a happy gal. Unfortunately, she has been there for over three months. That is too long to live in a kennel, so they are intently looking for the right home for her. Although she is very friendly and sweet, she does have a lot of energy and will need a lot of exercise when adopters take her home. But be aware, Jewel is strong on a leash and will need leash training as soon as she is adopted. Because she is somewhat difficult to handle on leash, they are recommending her go to a home with children over the age of 16. Jewel is a smart cookie; she is respectful and well mannered around people. Toss a tennis ball and she will instantly bring it back and drop it at your feet. She will keep playing fetch as long as her handler is willing to throw the ball. With the right leadership and guidance she will make a great companion.

Lunchbox is a chihuahua. This poor overweight fellow was dumped at the shelter during a rabies clinic by someone who claimed it was his friend's dog. He is now safe in the shelter, wondering why he is here. The shelter is looking for a calm, quiet home so he can feel comfortable and live out his life in peace. Lunchbox warms up nicely so they are confident with the right owners, he will feel like himself in no time. A gentle soul, he will need plenty of exercise to lose that excess weight, and once he does, he will be as good as new and feeling like a million bucks.

Your Price is Right at the Animal Shelter

The Bergen County Animal Shelter is "quite full these days," according to one staff member, and they have decided to run a special pet adoption program to place many of these pets in loving homes. "Your Price is Right" allows those interested in adopting a pet to set their own fee, with a minimum $10 donation required. The promotion runs through Sept. 15. "We are eliminating our normal adoption fees and asking our adopters to choose what price you feel is right to adopt a pet," according to a flyer issued by the shelter.
