The Teaneck American Legion collected toys for the Toys for Tots program. The program collects gifts for children in need.
A community party was held at the Golden Grill Dec. 19 to benefit the Teaneck Helping Hands Food Pantry. Residents brought food donations for the pantry and enjoyed free dinners from the Golden Grill.

Seeing football players all wearing shades of pink while on the field is definitely not what you'd expect, but at a "Powder puff Football" game, it makes perfect sense. The HEAL organization at Teaneck High School sponsored the 6th annual Powder Puff Football game where all the players are girls, and members of the football team help coach and cheer during the game. This year's charity is the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation, which works to eradicate breast cancer. The Teaneck Armory was overrun with superheroes and villains Sunday for one of two major comic book conventions in the area. The event featured the original "Batmobile" and actors dressed as classic comic book characters.
Teaneck Creek Conservancy held its EcoArt Day and Craft Fair over the weekend, featuring activities ranging from guided hikes to Native American storytellers. The event is designed to raise awareness of the park and often attracts hundreds of guests.
Bergen County Historian Kevin Wright shared the history surrounding the pumpkin, which European colonists called “pompion,” a word describing “a large ripe melon,” and English speakers later corrupted into “pumpkin.” Throughout the evening, visitors were able to partake in period refreshments at the Campbell-Christie House, a restored 18th century tavern. Guests were able to dance the night away at the Calico Frolic, a traditional 18th Century social gathering, held at the Steuben House at New Bridge Landing and hosted by the Bergen County Historical Society. Music was performed by Ridley and Ann Enslow on fiddle and hammered dulcimer. Dance Mistress Denise Piccino was available to instruct eager beginners in basic dance steps. Some people wore period clothing although it was not required.
Mexicali Live hosted a benefit concert Tuesday for Ava Borntrager, who has acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Performers included OURS, Lukas Rossi, Rad Bromance, The Alternative Outfit, Waldwick School of Rock, Zoe Gnecco, Looney Tunes and Jenny Jump.
Students from Paterson's School 5 and employees at medical technology firm BD recently brought hand-decorated quilts and pillows to patients of Holy Name Medical Center's pediatric and mother/baby units, and the clinic, a release said. The effort was led by Soaringwords, a non-profit group that works to support chronically ill children and their families. OLD BRIDGE -- Facing incredible 100-degree heat, the NJISAA held their 2011 Track and Field Meet of Champions Thursday in Old Bridge. Among the championship talent was members of the Teaneck Track and Field team notably Teaneck’s Senior Female Athlete of the Year Apresha Hampton who was a heavy favorite in the women’s Shot Put event. After a strong showing in the early rounds Hampton ranked first going into the finals with a 42 foot throw.
