DESCRIPTION:BLAST is thrilled to announce this show of bold paintings by
two New Jersey artists.\nDennis Young is best known professionally as th
e marimba/percussionist for the legendary early 80&rsquo\;s NYC band Liq
uid Liquid. This band had a major impact on hip-hop and dance music. Be
st known for their song &ldquo\;Cavern&rdquo\; which was sampled for th
 e Grandmaster Flash mega-hit &ldquo\;White Lines."\nOver the past sever
al years\, Dennis has been moved to paint. There is a strong relationshi
p between the music and the art that Dennis creates. Both rely heavily
on spontaneity\, rhythm\, and texture. The paintings in this show also
reflect an affinity for folk art. Images of tribal masks and abstract p
atterns collide in this body of work. These paintings seem to be connec
ted to an ancient past of native tribes and cultures that exist in Denn
is&rsquo\;s imagination.\nAndrew Riss grew up in a suburban town in Long
Island\, NY. Andrew went on to study painting at the Hartford Art Schoo
l\, where he became enamored by expressionist painters like Francesco C
lemente\, Phillip Guston\, and Anselm Kiefer. Since graduationg in 1991
\, Riss has worked as an artist\, running his own on-air graphics compa
ny\, while maintaining his interest in exploring painting.\nRiss descri
bes what he&rsquo\;s exploring in his current body of work\, &ldquo\;I
have always been both interested and confused by the concept of the body
as a vessel. That&rsquo\;s why I like to play with the idea of head as
funnel or loud speaker.&rdquo\; These paintings of heads\, headphones\
, horns and speakers are figurative\, while retaining a quasi-primitive
/comic appearance. There&rsquo\;s an emotional rawness to these mysteri
 ous captivating paintings.
