ENHANCING ONE'S EXPERIENCE OF THE HIGH HOLY DAYS

The Etz Chayim Institute, led by Rabbi Gerald Friedman, will present a 2 -session High Holy Days Workshop on two consecutive Wednesday evenings  at the Teaneck General Store on Cedar Lane. TGS is a Fair Trade cafe, gift store and event space serving the community through music, poetry, and other learning opportunities.

The workshop is designed to maximize engagement with the High Holiday Torah and Haftarah readings, select Machzor prayers, Talmudic and Chasidic tales, modern poems, traditional nusach(melodies) cantorial gems and contemporary melodies.

Learning kits for each session and take-home handouts will familiarize participants with Judaism's spiritual toolbox and help them become more skilled Jewish religious practitioners. The sessions will focus on three interlacing core elements for spiritual growth in this season:

1. Tshuvah - Identifying the questions and finding the answers for one's life.

2. Kol Shofar - Listening for and responding to inner and outer voices which challenge us to be better selves.

3. Zichron T'ruah - Arousing tears and action steps thru "moral memories".

The sessions will be guided by Rabbi Gerald Friedman, MSW, Rabbi Emeritus of Temple Beth Sholom of Pascack Valley, and founding director

of the Etz Chayim/Tree of Life Institute, which is devoted to enhancing the Jewish educational and spiritual development of individuals, families, and groups in our community. Rabbi Friedman has a distinguished record of creative and transformational programming in camp, JCC, Hillel and congregation settings. He is committed to engendering respect for both traditional and new religious practices...and helping people work out the best personal mix for themselves.

Sessions will blend brief lectures, hevruta (small group) text engagement, meditation exercises and musical selections. Participants will be invited to evaluate their workshop experience and its impact.

Advance registration fee for each session is $10 due by September 2nd; at the door fee is $12 per session. Space is limited and sessions will begin promptly at 7:15pm.

Date: September 5 & 12, 7:15 - 9:15 pm
