Storming for the Vote: Hurricane Sandy and the Election to be Presented February 20

Storming for the Vote:  Hurricane Sandy and the Election, a documentary film sponsored and produced by the League of Women Voters of New Jersey, will be shown on Thursday, February 20 at 7:00 p.m. at the Leonia Public Library, 227 Fort Lee Road, Leonia, New Jersey.  The film presentation, co-sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Northern Valley and the League of Women Voters of Teaneck, is open to the public and free of charge.

The inspiring 20-minute documentary chronicles the efforts that were made to ensure that citizens displaced or disrupted by the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy were able to exercise their right to vote.  The film will deepen viewers’ understanding of the election process.

Members of the League will be available to meet and greet attendees in a reception following the film presentation.  The public is welcome to invite a guest or bring a friend and learn about the League's mission to encourage informed and active participation in government, increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influence public policy through education and advocacy. Refreshments will be provided.  For information, call 201-947-0756.

The League was an outgrowth of the 19th amendment passed in 1920 giving women the right to vote.  With over 800 local Leagues throughout the country, the organization gained prestige by maintaining its nonpartisanship; sponsoring candidates’ forums for local, state and national elections; holding registration drives; disseminating nonpartisan information on candidates; and holding public meetings to discuss current issues.  League membership is open to both men and women of voting age who support its mission.

The League of Women Voters of Northern Valley draws members from 27 towns in Bergen County, New Jersey, including Alpine, Bergenfield, Cliffside Park, Closter, Cresskill, Demarest, Dumont, Edgewater, Emerson, Englewood, Englewood Cliffs, Fort Lee, Hackensack, Harrington Park, Haworth, Hillsdale, Leonia, Montvale, New Milford, Northvale, Norwood, Old Tappan, Park Ridge, River Vale, Tenafly, Washington Township and Woodcliff Lake.
