County to Host Juneteenth Celebration at Overpeck Park

Life-sized bronze MLK statue planned at FDU's Hackensack campus

Bergen County's Juneteenth celebration will be held June 22 at Overpeck County Park in Ridgefield Park.

The event will feature entertainment, food, games, vendors, family reunions, music, historical and cultural displays, and a tour of the Historical Gethsemane Cemetery. The celebration is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., rain or shine.

Visitors will also be able to see the maquette of a life-sized bronze statue of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., planned to be erected on the Hackensack River Pathway at Fairleigh Dickinson University's Hackensack campus.

Juneteenth marks the anniversary of the end of slavery in Texas June 19, 1865, about 18 months after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. Although the proclamation is widely believed to have officially liberated all slaves in the United States, the practice actually continued in Texas and elsewhere until the Union army was able to exert control over the entire South.

Awwww. Mrs. Lacey was my 6th grade science teacher at TJ. Good to see that she's still so active. Unfortunately, I will be out of town on the 22nd. I hope the event is well-attended.
