Teaneck Group to Protest Drone Attacks

Group points to civilian deaths from American drone program

A Teaneck anti-war group plans to hold a protest Wednesday calling for an end to U.S. drone attacks.

The Teaneck Peace Vigil will rally outside the National Guard Armory at Teaneck Road and Liberty Road from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m., the group announced.

The group, which includes military veterans, area residents and military families, pointed to a report saying the remotely-controlled drones were 10 times “more deadly” to Afghan civilians than attacks from fighter planes.

Organizers plan to bring in an 8-foot drone replica to the vigil.

The drone program, run by the CIA and military, is often used to target suspected terrorists, but officials rarely offer public comment on specific attacks. According to the Washington Post, drones attacks in Yemen have taken out 38 militants since July 27.

Opponents argue such attacks kill civilians and amount to secretive assassinations without due process. Among the more controversial strikes was the September 2011 drone attack that killed Anwar al-Awlaki, an American citizen described by President Obama as a top Al Qaeda operative.
