Crowds Expected at Overpeck Park Cricket Playoffs

Event could bring more than 1,000 people to the park

Bergen County officials are gearing up for a cricket championship at Overpeck Park, an event expected to bring more than 1,000 fans to the park, according to a news report.

Extra bleachers and Jumbotron will be brought in for the playoff games followed by championship game, set for Aug. 24-25. Cricket has become increasingly popular in Bergen County, namely among residents of Indian descent, NorthJersey.com reported.

“Everybody loves cricket in India...We want to promote cricket here in America,” said a league official, Vipul Shah, according to the report.

About a dozen teams practiced for the upcoming finals last weekend on soccer fields at Overpeck.

Cricket leagues already have permits to play in towns including Teaneck, Closter, Fort Lee and Hackensack, the site reported. Bergen County Parks Director Ron Kistner noted high demand for playing space and the county could one day have its own cricket field.
