Eatery Brings Taste of Colombia to Teaneck Road

New cafe features array of fresh food with coffee roasting station planned, owner says.

The handmade cornmeal patties, known as arepas, popular in many South American countries can now be found on Teaneck Road at Coffeecol Arepa Bar & Grill.

Owners, Leo Gonzalez and Olga Carvagal, opened Coffeecol Arepa Bar & Grill in November with hopes of bringing a taste of Colombia to what Gonzalez described as the already ethnically diverse town of Teaneck.

Coffeecol is striving to make their restaurant “a home, away from home,” as their menu exclaims, through a friendly environment, fresh food made on the premises and a roasting station where Coffeecol blend Colombian, Guatemalan and Brazilian coffee will be made fresh, starting in February, according to Gonzalez.

Coffeecol has plans to have videos playing throughout the restaurant demonstrating how their coffee is made, once their roasting station is up and running.

“We want to show the process of the coffee…from the soil up to your cup,” said Gonzalez.

Coffeecol boasts an extensive menu including an array of hot, cold, and breakfast sandwiches, gourmet burgers, hot dogs, salads, a number of a la carte items, and, of course, a wide-ranging list of arepa sandwiches, all made with fresh homemade ingredients.

An arepa is a patty made out of cornmeal.  Often times, the patty is used as a substitute for the bread of a sandwich, and that is exactly what Coffeecol does, according to Gonzalez.

“By the time we’re finished with it, it pretty much looks like a burger or a gyro type of thing,” said Gonzalez.

There are 16 different arepa sandwiches listed on the menu.  “We have chosen some items for everyone’s convenience, we’ve put together stuff that we know people are going to enjoy,” said Gonzalez.

But for those looking to get creative with their arepas, there is an option to create your own by choosing from a list of house made ingredients including, guacamole and fresh mozzarella cheese, according to Gonzalez.

“Our main focus is to be something for the community,” said Gonzalez.   With that goal in mind, they have implemented a 10 percent student discount to students during school hours, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Coffeecol also offers catering services for events including birthday parties, corporate events and more.  In addition to supplying the food, they rent out tables and chairs if needed, according to Gonzalez.

Coffeecol is open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays, from 7 a.m. to midnight on Saturdays, and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sundays.

Coffeecol is located at 1126 Teaneck Road, Teaneck. They can be reached at 201-357-2700.
