Teaneck Resident Drops Chain Food Job for Local Flavor

Local small business owner sees Teaneck as growing community.

Jorge Pelcastra had enough. The manager of a popular Cheesecake Factory restaurant wanted out.

“It was always so crowded,” he recalled. “I do miss the food, but not the job.”

He’s moved on, and the up side? He’s still the food business, and now it’s his own. has been on Cedar Lane for about 12 years – nearly the length of time Pelcastra has been a Teaneck resident. He took over Tony's about a year ago.

“I try to work with the town,” he said. “Teaneck brings me good customers who are looking for fresh food and a new style of food; new menu items like paninis and pastas. Also, items not many deli's provide, like Spanish cooking.”

Pelcastra offers breakfast all day long, triple-decker club sandwiches, hot and cold subs and wraps, eight types of burgers, a variety of salads, homemade soup, and milkshakes and floats. Tony’s Deli also sells cold cuts by the pound, and provides catering, Pelcastra explains.

“I eat here a lot,” regular customer Jeanne Verrier, of Teaneck, said in line waiting for her favorite egg salad sandwich. “They have very good service and the food is really good, too.”

For Peter Lawton, a Teaneck resident, any stop at Tony’s Deli means breakfast.

Lawton goes for the breakfast special of two eggs with meat with home fries, toast and coffee. “It’s the only thing I order when I come,” he said. “The food is good and the price is right. And this is a good cup of coffee, too.”

Food is available for takeout or eat in. Local free delivery is offered as well.

Pelcastra, who also runs the Spirit of the Park food concessions at New Overpeck Park in Ridgefield Park, said he sees Teaneck growing, and appreciates his location on busy Cedar Lane.

“Teaneck is an amazing place. The people are friendly, and the town is expanding and growing," Pelcastra said. "It’s a great community.”
