UPDATE: Massive Brush Fire Rages In Berkeley,…

New Arts Cafe to Open on Cedar Lane

Cafe named for famed Teaneck singer, songwriter.

A new cafe featuring live music, poetry and art space will open early next month at the former BLAST location on Cedar Lane.

The new cafe, Phoebe's Place, is named for the late chart-topping musician Phoebe Snow, who grew up in Teaneck, according to the owner's announcement made Wednesday. The cafe will host a range of artists and musicians while serving light and healthy fare.

The Phoebe's Place kitchen will include a menu created by chef Michelle Schotanus, the former owner of Salsa! in Edgewater, and Mind Body and Spirit. It will be BYOB and offer hearty and healthy soups, gourmet salads, sandwiches, burgers, cheese plates and some Mexican dishes, according to Leo Lavoro, a representative for the eatery.

Lunch will be served from noon to 4 p.m. during the week and on weekends, barring any special events. The main kitchen will open Wednesday through Friday from 6 to 10 p.m.

Cafe owner John Bale said in a news release he was inspired by Snow's work.

"With both of us having spent our early years in Teaneck it seemed fitting to dedicate the space to her and to any artist on a journey,” he said.

Bale also comes from an artistic background, having spent years in New York City as a playwriting, actor, producer, director and teacher, the release said.

Phoebe's Place will hold a grand opening Feb. 6 at 7 p.m. at 445 Cedar Lane.

I really don't understand the numerous complaints about lack of parking in Teaneck. Just park in back of the stores and walk around the corner. In Teaneck you don't even have to feed the parking meters as you do in Englewood and Hackensack.

It's about time!!!!!! I'll be supporting it for sure. This is exactly the type of businesses I would like to see open in Teaneck. Welcome!!

Noah Cohen February 13, 2013 at 07:06 PM

WOuld love to play here some time - please check me out - live here in Teaneck 20 years now - singer songwriter - here is a review of my latest concert - referred to Phoebe and my playing - cool coincidence hey?? www.laurenhooker.com Written by Richard Skelly For the Asbury Park Press Host of the “Low-Budget Blues Show’’ on WRSU 88.7 FM. If you miss the late singer-songwriter Phoebe Snow as much as I do, you’ll be happy to know that her native town of Teaneck has no shortage of female blues and jazz talent. Last Saturday, I went to hear vocalist-pianist Lauren Hooker and her Quartet at the Puffin Cultural Forum off Teaneck Road. She played some excellent blues and jazz piano, accompanied by Tim Horner on drums, John Hart on guitar and Martin Wind, bass and cello. She performed a blues song “Countin’ on the Blues,” a song she wrote as a 22-year-old, and her voice, one minute powerful and soulful and the next minute subtle and understated, at times reminded me of Snow, who we lost April 26, 2011 at a rehab/hospice center in Edison. Hooker included a tune by pianist Mal Waldron showcased her lyrics, “Seagulls of Kristiansund,” accompanied by Wind on cello. Hooker also threw in a stirring take on Shirley Horn’s “Here’s To Life.”

Bob and I had lunch at Phoebe's. Excellent red lentil soup and turkey sandwich with salad. Turkey was real roasted turkey, moist and delicious. Salad included with sandwich. Give Phoebe's a try. We think you'll be glad you went.
