The Skein Attraction To Close In March

Store featured wide selection of yarn and accessories and offered knitting classes

Owners of The Skein Attraction recently announced via their Facebook page that they will be going out of business in March after five “memorable” years. Julie Friedman and her daughters Shaina and Adina have run the colorful yarn shop since February 2006.

“We hope that your knitting and crocheting will continue to bring you as much joy as it has,” read the store’s Facebook posting on Jan. 30. “It certainly wasn't an easy decision to make, but we will always remember the people who came into our lives and supported us.”

The factors leading up to the store's closing are unknown. The owners did not return calls for comment. Officials at the Cedar Lane Management Group also did not return calls Wednesday.

A POPULAR PLACE FOR KNITTERS

For the last four years, Sheryl Schwarz drove all the way from Wayne to patronize the shop because she was impressed with the variety of the yarn and the level of customer service she found there.

“They had a huge selection, and all of it was great quality,” Schwarz said. “The two sisters, the mom and Keith (a store associate) – the combination of all of them made the store the most expert of places.”

Schwarz said she took knitting classes at the store to learn how to make socks and sweaters and move beyond the “beginner scarf maker.”

“The best thing I learned there was how to make sweaters,” she said. “In the last year, I’ve made four or five wearable sweaters. I’ve loved going there, and I thank them for their knowledge.”

Susan Bonin of Teaneck has enjoyed stopping by the store on Wednesdays to knit with other customers.

“I loved everything about the store,” she said. “The owners were nice and very knowledgeable about the crafts. They could do anything. Because of knitting there on Wednesdays, I met some other lovely people. The camaraderie was great. If you needed help, everyone pitched in and gave their advice.”

Bonin also said the store was in a convenient location for her.

“I don't know what I'm going to do now,” she said. “I will really miss them.”

The closing comes after another Cedar Lane small business, Animations, .

According to the store’s Facebook page, all merchandise is up to 40 percent off. Hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, with extended hours until 8 p.m. Wednesdays. The store is closed Sundays and Mondays.
