Bergen County Awarded $500K Grant for Overpeck Park Project

County to add nearly seven miles of new walking paths at Overpeck Park

Bergen County has received a $500,000 state Department of Transportation grant to pay for new walking paths in Overpeck Park, County Executive Kathleen Donovan announced Friday.

Funds will be used to finish a missing link of walking paths across Overpeck and link all of the park's venues, Donovan said in a statement. The project calls for a continuation of a paved pedestrian path and bridge along Overpeck Lake in Leonia and Palisades Park.

Plans also include continuing paths near the Equestrian Center, along with unpaved nature trails, lookouts and rest areas, according to the county. In all, 6.7 miles of new paths will be added.

"The new paths will ease travel within the park areas and offer opportunities to better enjoy park facilities and generally improve the quality of life for the County residents," Donovan said.

Bergen County was one of 28 projects to receive funding under the state's Transportation Enhancement Program, officials said. The state received 149 applications for the grants.
