Model of Martin Luther King Jr. Monument Unveiled at FDU

A 33-inch model of a Martin Luther King Jr. monument planned along the Hackensack River was unveiled Tuesday at Fairleigh Dickinson University, The Record reported.

The bronze statue of King will be more than 7-feet tall and is set to be finished by the end of May. The model displayed Tuesday shows King holding a scroll, a symbol of wisdom, and dressed in robes.

Sculptor Richard Blake was selected out of a nationwide search, according to the report.

“He seemed to capture the whole essence of who Martin Luther King was,” Teaneck resident Theodora Lacey, co-chairwoman of the Martin Luther King Jr. Monument Committee, told the newspaper. “He was a spiritual leader, advocate for peace, strong advocate for justice and a scholar, and he represented all these things in his presentation. That is what really captured us.”

While fundraising for the project was officially launched Tuesday, $60,000 has already been collected of the effort’s goal of $250,000, the report said. Some of the funds will be used for a scholarship program.
