Support Open Spaces for Our Downtown

With input and support from the community, the Hackensack Main Street Business Alliance (Upper Main Alliance) has worked with several city administrations over the last 11 years to bring about comprehensive downtown development.  With one major project under construction and at least two large-scale projects being proposed, our shared vision is finally becoming a reality.  But we still need your help.

The next step is to ensure the creation of downtown open space.  On Tuesday night, May 6th, Hackensack’s Council will decide whether to transform an under-utilized municipal parking lot on Atlantic Street into a park and small amphitheater.  This project is important because it signals Hackensack’s willingness and ability to provide a modern, lively, downtown atmosphere found in other, competing downtown housing markets.   The space is well-designed, preserves plenty of parking spaces and its costs will eventually be covered by future tax revenue generated through development. Opponents may not realize how necessary “open space” is to a downtown.  All independent experts who have experience in creating great downtowns agree that open space is vital. As the development community looks at Hackensack for potential investment opportunity, we know they consider open space an extremely important issue. The park’s creation sends a message that the City is serious about its commitment to our downtown. More importantly, this open space allows all Hackensack residents to enjoy their Main Street and the excitement that a vibrant city center will soon offer.

Park opponents have already managed to sideline a vote, so we need  your support on this issue NOW. Please attend Tuesday’s Council meeting and let your elected officials know that you Support Open Space in your Downtown.  With more than 10 years invested in this effort, we know we must take a stand. We also need your voice to be heard.
