Alternative Treatment Center in Egg Harbor expected to alleviate New Jerseyans demand for medical marijuana.

New Jersey's second marijuana dispensary, Compassionate Care Foundation, opens in South Jersey Monday, the Press of Atlantic City reported.

Compassionate Care joins the state's first Alternative Treatment Center, Greenleaf Compassion Center in Montclair, in legally distributing marijuana to qualified patients and is expected to alleviate demand for the drug.

Some 600 patients have registered with the South Jersey center and appointments have been booked through November, Compassionate Care Foundation CEO Bill Thomas told the Press of Atlantic City.

Greenleaf in Montclair has been troubled with meeting demand and was shuttered earlier this year for distributing an "inferior" product.

More than 1,300 patients and caregivers, and 242 physicians, are registered with the state's Medicinal Marijuana Program, according to the Department of Health.

Additional ATCs are in various stages of approval. The Compassionate Care Center of America in Woodbridge got the green light to begin cultivation in August and is expected to open later this year.
