A former high school athlete from Bergen County died Sunday afternoon, several weeks after he sustained serious injuries from a suicide attempt, NorthJersey.com reported.

Michael Menakis, an 18-year-old Ho-Ho-Kus resident and freshman basketball player at The College of New Jersey, died at the Capital Health Regional Medical Center in Trenton, the report said.

Menakis had been in a coma since he was found by authorities following a suicide attempt in a TCNJ campus parking garage on April 30, it said.

He had suffered serious head injuries during the attempt, it said.

According to the report, the Class of 2013 Northern Highlands graduate was an accounting major and member of the Sigma Pi fraternity.

Menakis’s death comes after the suicide of Madison Holleran, another Northern Highlands grad and college athlete who committed suicide while away at the University of Pennsylvania. Holleran was a local track star whose January funeral drew hundreds of mourners.

According to nj.com, Menakis’s funeral mass is scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Luke's Roman Catholic Church in Ho-Ho-Kus. Donations can be made to the  Boy Scouts Post 54 Scholarship or the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, the report said.

What "comment" could take away the pain of this? I am speechless, praying for all survivors. :(

Heartbreaking. It makes my "problems" seem so insignificant...my heart goes out to the family. May this young man find the peace that this world cannot give.
