Garden State Plaza 911 Tapes Capture Fear After Gunfire
Bergen County authorities on Wednesday released audio recordings of panicked customers at the Garden State Plaza phoning police after a 20-year-old Teaneck man opened fire at the shopping center Monday.
The gunman, Richard Shoop, fired at least six shots at random in the mall before taking his own life. No one else was hurt and investigators have said they believe Shoop was only looking to harm himself.
While the tapes capture fearful employees and customers, they also show police dispatchers bringing calm to the chaotic first minutes of the gunfire.
