Man Charged in Teaneck Murder Would Kill Wife If Released, Prosecutor Says

A judge on Thursday rejected a request to lower bail for the man accused in what prosecutors have described as the love-triangle slaying of a Teaneck software engineer, northjersey.com reported.

Sui Kam “Tony” Tung has close ties to China and his brother is a convicted felon, giving Tung access to weapons and fake documents, Judge Liliana DeAvila-Silebi said in denying his request for a reduction of the $3 million bail, according to the report. 

Tung is accused the March 2011 death of Robert Cantor. Prosecutors allege Tung began stalking Cantor after he learned of a relationship Cantor was having with Tung's estranged wife. Cantor was also separated from his wife. 

Assistant Bergen County Prosecutor Wayne Mello claimed Tung confronted Cantor at his home before the killing and demanded to be shown the bedroom where the Elm Avenue resident had sex with his estranged wife, the report said. Cantor, a prosecutor said, took him to a basement bedroom. Months later Cantor was found dead in that same bedroom. 

Mello told the court he had "no question in my mind" Tung would kill his wife if released, the report said. 

Tung was fighting for custody of his three young children before his arrest, and his wife has obtained a protective order against him. 

Tung's defense attorney, David Goldstein, claimed the case was circumstantial and his client never tried to flee in more than a year between the murder and arrest. 

The case now goes to a grand jury for indictment.
