Brooklyn Man Killed in Fall From Palisades Cliff

Witnesses said the man was beyond a safety barrier, according to police.

A 26-year-old Brooklyn man was found dead after witnesses say he went beyond a marked safety barrier and fell off a cliff at Rockefeller Lookout in Englewood Cliffs Saturday night, police said.

Officers rushed to the scenic lookout within minutes of receiving a report that a man had fallen shortly before 9 p.m., according to Palisades Interstate Parkway Police.

A search effort by Englewood Cliffs firefighters, the East Bergen Rappel Team and New York Police Department’s Aviation Unit located the man’s body directly below where he reportedly fell, police said.

“He was reported to have been on the cliff edge beyond a placarded safety barrier near the middle of the lookout,” Lt. Michael J. Coppola said in a statement.

Police identified the man Sunday afternoon as Artem Adzhyev. He was visiting the lookout with friends but not linked to the Ironman triathlon, according to a police statement.

The death was not believed to be suspicious, police said.

In June, two people died in falls from cliffs in the Palisades Interstate Park. A 45-year-old Spring Lake man and a 16-year-old Fort Lee High School in the Fort Lee section of the park.
