Police Divers Find Body of Missing Swimmer in Overpeck Park

Area firefighters, police helicopter aided in search effort

Bergen County police divers on Sunday recovered the body of a swimmer who went missing in Overpeck Creek Saturday, police said.

Officers with the county police water search and recovery team found the man’s body around 1:30 p.m., about 100 feet from the shore and approximately ten feet below the water, according to Bergen County Police Lt. James Mullin.

Witnesses told police the man tried to swim from the east to west bank of the creek, in waters off the Palisades Park section of Overpeck Park, around 5 p.m. Saturday, Mullin said. The man made it a little more than halfway across, but tried to turn back before disappearing under the surface.

County police, a state police helicopter and firefighters from Teaneck, Leonia, Palisades Park, Ridgefield Park and Ridgefield initially searched the murky waters Saturday, but were forced to postpone the effort as darkness set in.

The man’s name was not immediately released, pending notification of his next of kin. Police said he was described as being between 20 and 30 years old.
