UPDATE: River Dell Student Killed in Route 4 Pedestrian Accident

Police say 17-year-old hit by a vehicle near Hackensack Avenue.

A 17-year-old Oradell youth killed on Route 4 late Saturday was a senior at River Dell High School, River Dell Schools’ superintendent confirmed Sunday.

The teen, whose name was not released, was fatally struck by a car near Hackensack Avenue around 11 p.m., authorities said.

Officers rushed to a report of a person hit on the highway's westbound lanes and found the teen, police said. The teenager was pronounced dead at the scene.

The vehicle involved remained at the scene and witnesses gave statements to investigators, according to the Bergen County Police Department, who are investigating the crash.

“It is a tragic loss that remains under investigation by Bergen County authorities,” River Dell Superintendent of Schools Patrick Fletcher said in a statement. “We have mobilized district personnel as well as personnel from neighboring school districts to be available to students, staff and the community who may need counseling.”

Police blocked Route 4 westbound for about three hours, causing extensive traffic delays into Teaneck. No other injuries were reported.

JAMES TS- maybe he was getting off of work at that hour. Many teens work at the malls that are right on RTE 4.
DMAB6395 September 23, 2012 at 06:10 PM
My sympathies & thoughts are with the family & his friends. Too many accidents on RTE 4...not a day goes by that you don't hear of a accident or multiple accidents on RTE 4. This highway wasn't built to handle all the traffic that's on it. With all the malls that are on it now or the strip malls like the one across from the new Bergen Centre Mall with David's Bridals etc. too much traffic & people who drive like idiots just to get to Party City etc.

I lost my son Kevin almost 4 years now - and it hurts just as much today as it did then. My heart goes out to the family in this horrible horrible time. So tragic, and senceless. Same as my son. To good for this world. RIP There is nothing I can say - Kevin take care of him. Kevin was only 15 when he passed. Suzanne Beattie (Mom) I love you Kevin RIP.

I feel sorry for the family and friends...... but why would any one be on Rt4 any time of the day anyway? Why not use the over head bridges and walk some.... or call a cab or some friend or a family member to pick you up..... it is not worth taking the risk crossing a roadway... Why people feel free to criticize drivers who are merely driving on roadways..... and not blame someone who took unnecessary risks and caused the accident in the first place.... I was driving at around 11PM a few months ago and had to break hard to save an idiot who was trying to walk across Rt4 near THS. If not for my anti-lock breaks functioning perfectly he would have been be a corpse right there and then..... Thanks God I walk around with a clear conscious... just imagine no fault of mine and I hit some one on the Rt4..... how terrible my life would have been.... (not to belittle the pain and suffering of the grieving family - feel sorry for them.....) Positive suggestion: We need to educate people to walk only on designated walkways and not to take unnecessary risks... nothing is worth loosing your life after.....

no one knows the full story so please stop commenting. he was a great kid and you should not comment unless it is something nice. he was a great friend to me and i would really appriciate it if you don't talk trash. just don't make assumptions!
DMAB6395 September 30, 2012 at 06:06 AM
Zizi, You start saying you feel sorry for his family & friends & then you go & blame him for being hit & killed. There are so many reasons for that kid to be walking...he may have gotten off of work at the mall or one of the gas stations or even Hooters. You don't know what happened because you weren't there. You also go on a rant about how people blame the drivers & not the people who are walking! HOW can you say you have a clear conscious when you are publicly blaming the victim of a accident for being killed? HOW DARE YOU COME ON HERE & PUBLICLY BLAME THE VICTIM OF A HORRIBLE ACCIDENT FOR BEING WHERE HE WAS & DOING WHAT HE WAS DOING & THEN JUST BEFORE YOUR LITTLE TIRADE SAY YOU FEEL SORRY FOR THE FAMILY & FRIENDS??? IF YOU DID THEN YOU WOULD HAVE JUST SAID YOU FEEL SORRY FOR THEM & ENDED IT INSTEAD OF BLAMING THIS POOR KID FOR BEING HIT & KILLED BY A CAR! WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU? You are unbelievable. This poor family is suffering a great heartbreak & they have to bury their SON, because of a ACCIDENT. You stated that you drive on RTE 4 then you should know how dangerous the drivers are on that highway. There are more car accidents on that highway then people getting hit by cars on that highway. At least 1x a day you hear of a CAR ACCIDENT on the highway & I'm talking about a car hitting another car. YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELF. EVEN IF IT WAS HIS FAULT YOU KEEP IT TO YOURSELF & LET HIS FAMILY GRIEVE FOR HIM WITHOUT THEM HAVING TO READ YOU SAYING IT'S HIS OWN FAULT
DMAB6395 September 30, 2012 at 06:07 AM
OneLove, I am so sorry for the loss of your friend. I am also sorry that SOME PEOPLE are asses & don't know how to keep their feelings to themselves. Please pass on my sympathies to his family!
zizi September 30, 2012 at 03:14 PM
I guess some people here are not familiar with freedom of speech right we all enjoy in this country....... I want people to know that we as a society has a duty to prevent such accidents (caused by ignoring the law)..... we need to make corrections and make sure such accidents don't happen again. We all know this accident happen due to someone not following the law. What is wrong in saying that we need to educate people and make sure people don't walk on highways...... You guys are nuts to criticize me and using CAPS... and using langauge no decent person will use in front of their kids. I will use my right to free speech until I am silenced. I know I am right here..... regardless of what anyone says. As much as I feel for this person's family... it is my duty to try to change people's mind about how we should approach this issue........ We need to prevent such accidents by educating our youth...... @ OneLove: We know this accident happened because someone was on a highway instead of a sidewalk. @DMAB6395: I don't think there is any reason good enough for someone to be on a highway... There are nuts who try to walk on the highway and no sane person can blame the drivers when such a nut is involved in an accident. Be as angry or upset as you want to be but the turth is what it is...... sorry if you don't like to see the truth..... truth do hurt......
JAD September 30, 2012 at 06:07 PM
By some people, do you mean yourself Zizi? Freedom of speech does not grant you the right to throw insensitive comments out into the world without the consequences of the general public telling you how inappropriate you are. If you we're threaded by a governmental agency with deah or jail time for making these types of statements then you would have a freedom of speech leg to stand on. Otherwise you are seeking protection from a right that does not apply to you in this instance.
DMAB6395 October 01, 2012 at 01:25 AM
Thanks JAD-I agree with you 100%. Was I being harsh with you, Zizi? YES & you don't like it...well tough shit. Like I said how dare you come on here & say what you said so the family can see it. All you care about it saying what YOU think is right. Not what is right. Also it's not YOUR duty to change people's mind on anything. The only duty you have is to teach your OWN kids this. To come on here & be heartless & then to say what you said to OneLove while they are grieving for the loss of their friend is totally ASSINE. Also where you there when the accident happened? How do you know what happened? How do you know it wasn't the driver's fault? Only the people that are involved KNOW THE TRUTH. And since you were NOT THERE you know nothing.
OneLove October 01, 2012 at 02:44 AM
Thank you DMAB. You are right, the only people that know the truth are the people that are involed in the whole situation. And to have someone like Zizi say those insensitive comments that actually got me upset because it was my friend and it was so rude. Zizi, you don't know the whole situation and it was not right for you to come on here and say that he was a nut and basically out if his mind. To tell you the truth, he was a very nice person, he always put other people before himself and thought of others before himself. And for you to only be thinking of yourself is horrible and selfish. It is hard enough dealing with the loss of my friend but just think of how his parents must feel. They lost their young, good hearted son. They don't need people like you Zizi bashing on how they should have raised their son. DON'T EVER CRITICIZE HOW OTHER PEOPLE RAISE THEIR CHILDREN. YOU DON'T HAVE TO PUT THE BLAME ON OTHER PEOPLE, JUST SAY THAT I AM SORRY FOR HIS FRIENDS AND FAMILY AND KEEP YOUR COMMENTS TO YOURSELF.

The poor boy had his funeral and is at peace ow, amen. Please no more. Negative comments
DMAB6395 October 02, 2012 at 07:36 PM
One Love, Your welcome. Again I am so sorry for the loss of your friend. I do hope that you can pass on my sympathies to his family. Also don't think of what Zizi said. Remember all the good times that you had with your friend. You will be together one day-hopefully after you have had a full & happy life well into your 80's or 90's. Peace be with you. And not everyone is inconsiderate & rude.
OneLove October 03, 2012 at 02:01 AM
Thank you, you are so sweet and so is my friend. Peace be with you too and thank you for your thoughts and sympathies. I just hope Zizi has a concious........ and it shows him what he has said. It was so rude and my other friends who were also friends with the guy, told me how rude it was to say such a thing and how dare he judge someone when they do not t=know the entire story.
