Crime in Teaneck Decreased in 2011, Report Says

Burglaries were up amid other declines, according to newly released law enforcement data.

Crime in Teaneck declined in 2011 over the previous year, according to recently released state police data. 

The 604 overall incidents reported in 2011 was down from 678 in 2010, the state Uniform Crime Report showed. Violent crime reported in the township also saw a decline from 79 incidents to 70 in 2011. 

The data tracked reports of murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny-theft and motor vehicle theft, known as "index crimes."

Robbery was down from 36 to 33 reported incidents last year, according to the report. 

The reported declines came the same year Teaneck's police department grew from 100 employees to 108 in 2011, the data showed.

Burglary, however, was up in 2011 to 137 reported cases, ten more break-ins than the year before. 

Three murders were reported in Teaneck in 2010, including one allegedly drug-related double slaying. A Bergen County jury last week cleared the accused trigger man of the killings. The other murder, . 

Police have made arrests in 2011's only two Teaneck killings. 

Countywide, the report showed Bergen also saw an increase in burglary last year.

There were 217,073 reported crimes in New Jersey in 2011. . 

According to the report, there was a crime committed once every 2 minutes and 25 seconds in 2011, and males accounted for 69 percent of arrests.
