Teaneck Ex-Con Indicted in Township Burglaries

Attorney for accused burglar says bail is too high, according to report.

A 37-year-old convicted robber from Teaneck was indicted Thursday on charges that he broke into two homes on Hanover Street in January, northjersey.com reported.

Kali Carter was out on bail for burglaries in Fort Lee when police arrested him for the two Teaneck burglaries, records show.

In , Teaneck police responded to a burglar alarm going off and found a glass patio door had been smashed, and jewelry stolen, authorities said at the time. Officers learned another nearby house had been burglarized and found the bedroom ransacked.

Investigators set up surveillance on Carter’s Cranford Place home. As detectives watched, Carter pulled up with another man, 21-year-old Hackensack resident Hakeem Chance, police said.

Carter and Chance drove to an Englewood apartment complex where investigators saw the pair toss items taken from Hanover Street in a dumpster, according to police.

Corrections Department records show Carter was paroled after serving time for robbery and weapons offenses when he allegedly committed the Teaneck break-ins. The indictment charges Carter with offenses including weapons possession and burglary.

The pair were both released on bail and prosecutors are trying to have Carter’s bail revoked or raised, the report said. He was held on $225,000 bail. 

Carter’s attorney argued his client was not a flight risk and a bail hearing is scheduled for Monday.

In the Fort Lee case, police said during two break-ins.
